“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

                                                John Muir

John Edward Guibert passed suddenly on October 15, 2019.  He was doing what he loved most, birding on a beautiful day in the Great Swamp.  Arrangements are private under the direction of the Norman Dean Home For Services.  Donations in his memory may be made to the good work of The Friends of The Great Swamp, 32 Pleasant Plains Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920.   Please share your memories here.  John’s family will cherish them forever.

John was born in 1938 to the late Francois and Florence Guibert.  He grew up on Indian Lake in Denville and was one of two children to bless the family After High School he joined the Coast Guard, proudly serving our country.  Upon his honorable discharge, he graduated from Seton Hall and then went on to earn his MA from there as well.  In 1965 he married Rita Gala.  They returned to Denville, then spent some years in Forest Lake, Byram Township.  John was a teacher and then a guidance counselor for over 32 years at Valleyview Middle School.  He enjoyed his time with the Denville BOE thoroughly. He was an active member for nearly 30 years with the Denville Kiwanis.  He enjoyed many friendships within the organization and donated his time and talents graciously.  He truly had a heart of gold.  In 1984 the family relocated to Morris Township, where they have resided ever since.

John was a true outdoorsman.  He loved hiking, kayaking, biking and anything in nature.  He enjoyed these activities especially with his sons through the years. He was an avid reader, soaking in many books each week. He loved ice hockey and even played himself,  well into his adult years.  His passion of course was birding.  He was happy to be a Friend & Volunteer with the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge these past few years.  He loved his time there.  Although we are saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing he is flying with the birds and watching over his family with love.

He leaves beautiful memories to his wife Rita of 54 years; his son John F. Guibert and Christopher S. Guibert (Amy Oestreich); his sister Suzanne Guibert; and many more dear relatives, friends; peers and fellow nature lovers.
