Dr. Wagner was my professor for several math classes when I was an undergraduate, and my advisor when I did my M.S. degree. I am very sad to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I offer my belated condolences to Professor Wagner's family, as I only learned of this today, and I am very sad to learn this news. I have a math background and live in Convent Station, NJ. When I first moved to Morris County I reached out to Professor Wagner and asked if he would be interested in meeting to study Serge Lang's encyclopedic text on Abstract Algebra. He responded that he would and since September 2007 we met often in his office for an hour or two on Saturday mornings to discuss the text and mathematics generally. He was very generous with his time and his insights on mathematics. His recollections of the famous mathematicians that mentored him during his time at the University of Chicago in the late 1960s was inspiring. Several times I brought my son who was just finishing middle school, to my Saturday meetings with Professor Wagner. Besides talking about what he was doing in school, my son found it a real treat to discuss the nature of mathematics of Ancient Egypt with professor Wagner. In the last couple of years we met more sporadically, and so I am very sad to hear of his passing.

I am very sorry for your loss Wagner family. May the love and support from our Creator and from eachother sustain you during this especially difficult time. One thing that helps me during times of grief is knowing that death can only separate loved ones temporarily. God makes this assurance to you as well because there will be a resurrection (Acts 24:15). He perfectly remembers everything you love and miss about your loved one. In due time, your tears of joy will replace the tears of sorrow you shed over Richard because he can be with you on a paradise earth (Psalm 37:11). Please take good care of yourselves and eachother.

Dr. Wagner was a wonderful professor. He taught Calculus 1 and 2 in 1979. His exams made you ponder how what he taught you in class related to the subject matter. Dr. Wagner, was always available after class to answer questions. He would be smoking his pipe at his desk ready for his next student challenge. Dr Wagner, taught me patience with attention to detail. Rest in peace, Dr. Wagner, rest in peace.

To Dr. Wagner's Family,
I met Dr. Wagner for the first time teaching as an adjunct for the Math Department in Fall 2015. Whenever I saw him in ZEN building, he would smile at me and asked how I was. Being new to the department, I'd seek his advice about a course that I was teaching in the next semester; He made time for me and was very patient with my questions. His passing is a great sadness, but I will always remember him whenever I walk the halls of ZEN building.
Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.
Sorrowfully,
Natalie Yang and Family

Our mentor, respected professor, a tour de force in our Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics department - Dr. Wagner - you will be missed. Dr. Wagner would have loved to share the news "The World Has A New Largest-Known Prime Number - a whopping 24,862,048 digits long (~25 million digits long!)," Posted on December 21, 2018, this Mersenne prime (named for a French monk named Marin Mersenne who studied primes some 350 years ago) has a simple formula: 2^n-1. In this case, "n" is equal to 82,589,933, which is itself a prime number.
We are glad our children were able to take your class.
Keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers,
The Sinha family
