To the entire Leach family:
I know this comes very late but I just heard about David’s passing.
Though I had not seen him in decades, the news is heartbreaking. David was, as others have said, a wonderful, energetic, spirited leader among our peer group. Captain of our soccer team and in so many ways, the straw that stirred the drink socially among our high school crowd.
Though I moved from Randolph just a year after high school, the memories of good times with David and the soccer crowd streamed back when I heard this terrible news. From riding in his yellow Gremlin to double sessions in the summer, to sharing a love for Bruce and the Jukes, to parties, prom and so many other things in between, it is hard to come up with a high school memory that does not involve David.
It comes as no surprise that he grew to be a wonderful husband and father. David was always a leader, and more importantly, always a friend. To see that he threw himself into his family life and his choldren’s Activities is exactly what I would have expected from my captain and my friend.
It is said that the measure of a life is the impact it has upon others. In every measure, David's life was full, impactful and very well-lived. We are all better for having known you and lesser for having lost you.
Godspeed my friend.
Harry

I would like send my thoughts and prayers to Dave's family.
I truly enjoyed Dave and his continual good humor. As his client (in the mid 90's), he treated me with the utmost respect and kindness. His smile and laughter was infectious – he knew how to make a boring work project seem like a good time!
He was a gem!

Joanne,
We haven't seen you and Dave since Chris and Joseph played hockey together, but I recall a lovely, smiling couple. Dave was always friendly and upbeat, and we used to tease him (with envy) that he looked like he was 18! I just viewed the video; it pulled at my heart. What a full and happy life is was in the midst of. We are so sorry.
We send you, Chris and Jenna our prayers for comfort and love to surround you all.

I’d like to pass along my deepest and sincerest condolences to Joanne, Christopher, Jenna and the entire Leach family. Dave was a great husband and father, but also good friend and tremendous influence in my life.
Well, where do I begin? I met Dave when I first moved to NJ and started 4th grade at Fernbrook Elementary. As the new kid, it was tough to initially fit in, but eventually I met Dave and we were fast friends. Here are just few stories about Dave, and how he had a huge effect on my life:
Dave was the coolest kid I knew and we both had many of the same interests; playing the drums, talking sports and eventually playing soccer together. Hanging with Dave helped me to be accepted by the other cool kids and eased my acceptance into the new school. The drums was the first thing that brought us together, playing in the school band. I’ll never forget the one concert where they made Dave, Joey Goodson and myself dress up like China-men with coolie hats and Fu Manchu mustaches and play a drum solo called ‘The Wishy Washy Laundry.’ So embarrassing and most likely politically incorrect in this day and age, but we made it through! At the end of the sixth grade year, Dave got a full drum set and brought it to school for the end of year party, further embedding him as the coolest kid I knew
.
In middle school, the drums continued to be our bond, as well as playing soccer. We both made the soccer Travel Team in eighth grade, the beginning of our love for the sport and another bond that would carry us through high school. As freshman I’ll never forget one of the first soccer practices we had with Coach Luckowicz. Trying to get us motivated he asked the team if anyone had seen Rocky during the summer. Dave immediately blurted out ‘Star Wars was better – pew, pew, pew!’ Absolutely hilarious, but he paid for it with some extra laps that day. During one Junior Varsity game, Dave was getting annoyed with the ref and was letting him know it. The ref told him if he didn’t stop he was going to give him a yellow card. Dave in the defiant manner he sometimes had immediately blurted ‘Well then card me!’ I couldn’t stop laughing as the ref looked like he was having spasms trying to get the card out of his pocket. Senior year Dave and I were elected Co-Captains of the Soccer Team. After a losing season the previous year, Dave and I helped lead the team to Conference Champions and finally earned our Varsity jackets. During one particular game I remember from that season, I sent in a cross from the left side and Dave headed it home for a nice goal, captain to captain. To be funny, I ran up to him and kissed him on the cheek like they do in Europe. He laughed and then said ‘Don’t ever do that again!’
Dave also had a great sense of style. Whether it was tying shoe strings around his calves under his soccer socks so they would show like the English players, being the first guy I knew with Jordache Jeans or wearing a tie-bar, Dave introduced me to a better sense of fashion that I did not have. He always looked like a million bucks. I always wanted to emulate him, but I just never looked as good in clothes as he did.
In High School is when I remember Dave started his love for hockey. As a joke, he’d often tell everyone he was related to Reggie Leach, who played for the Flyers at the time. He soon started to join us at Matt Boise’s house down on Shongum Lake or that terrible pond behind Crupi’s house when they would freeze in the winter. Dave was a bit of a ‘Bambi’ on the ice at first, but with his natural athletic ability was soon mixing it up with all of us. We’d spend hours playing until the sun went down. When NJ finally got our own professional team, we both became fans of the Devils. I’ll never forget the front row seats he got us from work and about 150 other fans (kidding, but it was empty) at that time for the Devils!
Dave was also a big music fan in High School and had a big influence on my early tastes. He introduced me to Southside Johnny and I became a big fan. He and I went to see him at Great Adventure, the first concert I had ever been to. As we waited for the concert to begin, we saw a totally wasted girl walk across the venue into the wall right below us. We couldn’t stop laughing as her friends gathered her up. I guess it was our mutual sick sense of humor! Dave was also very generous with Mark and Steven’s awesome record collection. We’d make some of the best Mix-Tapes coveted by all of our friends and the sound track to many of the parties we went to. When Dave attended RIT to pursue his Graphics degree, I often times visited him to hang out and go to concerts. We saw Hall and Oats, Bryan Adams and Journey together to name a few. We had a blast every visit and there are some details of those visits that will remain between Dave and me forever.
Dave and I stayed in touch via letters when I went overseas to study for a year and re-connected when I returned the following year. It was one night when Dave, Jimmy Campisi and I went out to Jordan’s night club when he met the love of his life. I’ll never forget Dave coming back and telling me how cute the girl checking coats was. Dave spent most of the rest of that night chatting up Joanne and couldn’t stop talking about her on the ride home. He was smitten. At that point is when Dave and I started to drift apart as you do when you meet your soul mate.
About 8 years ago, we reconnected and met at a bar with Sharpe and Crupi to rehash some of the ‘Glory Days’. I spouted on with stories of all of the trouble we avoided and occasionally didn’t avoid but Dave couldn’t seem to remember much of it. I was worried at the time he didn’t seem to remember much, but glad we were able have some laughs again. It was like we hadn’t been apart for much time at all and picked up right where we left off.
Well Dave, as you cross over to the better place I’m sure all of your memories will come flooding back to you. I can only hope this note helps you to remember all of the great times we had growing up, how you were loved and how much you meant to those around you. Especially me. Whether it was playing golf and tennis together, the thick of battle on the soccer field or hockey pond, discussing our love lives, the drudgery of school classes together, playing drums in the school band, going to concerts and Yankees/Cosmos games or just hanging at your pool it was my profound honor and pleasure to have you as my friend.
You are truly the coolest guy I have ever known. Your friend always,
Scott B.

Dave was an Amazing person with a great sense of humor. His awesome personality made it fun to be around him. He definitely left this world too young and we ask God why Dave?
Although his sickness was a tragedy beyond words, his family stepped up and went above and beyond whatever could be expected.
Uncle Chet was there every day making sure everyone was taken care of. Jenna you were always so kind and patient with your Dad. Christopher I watched you go from a boy to a man through out this illness and Joanne you became stronger than I ever could have imagined. I Know in my heart that Dave is proud of all of you. I know this is so very sad but try to remember all of the good times and Remember you have the best Angel ever looking out for you!

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. I was friends with Marilyn growing up and was fortunate to be able to a lot of time at the "Leach house"; swimming, watching TV, warming up after sleigh riding, playing pool in the basement, and eating home made pizza. The family was always a very close unit. His mother dedicated her life to making a happy house always putting her children first. I'm sure that helped to make David the great father and husband he became. As a child I remember him being a force of nature either playing kick ball or tag; holding his own with the older kids.
Again, I'm sorry to hear of the tragic news, and I know that his children, much like David having experienced a nurturing and loving family will grow up to be as kind and thoughtful as their father.
Sincerely,
Janice

When I heard, I wept. David was may classmate in high school, my captain of the Randolph soccer team, and my friend. Wonderful memories flood my mind as I reflect on our times together. Alumni soccer games, times at the Jersey Shore, parties with the "Dane's and Sweed's" (the visiting soccer teams from Europe); and of course just being "real" among friends. There will always be a place in my heart reserved for the memories I share of you, David Leach!!!
To the family: Philippians 4:7 in the bible says it best; "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ (during this time of grieving).

Dear Leach Family,
I am so saddened to hear of David’s passing. I recently heard of David’s illness and have and will keep him as well as all of you in my prayers. Growing up next door and being 5 years younger then David, I just idolized him. He always looked out for me and he made sure I was always around and included with all the big kids as we played stick ball and soccer everyday, for years. I knew then he was just a great guy who made everyone better people by knowing him. He led by example and he was very kind and considerate. He has always been a part of my cherished childhood memories. I am so sorry for all of you loss.

To the family:
It has been a long time since I was in touch with the Leach family, but David and I graduated high school in the same class and remained friends even after that. We were on the soccer team together.
I spent many a day with David at his house and just hanging out with fellow soccer friends and unfortunately over time we drifted apart. When I heard the news, so many wonderful memories of our time spent together in Randolph came flooding back, and all of them were great.
I am sorry for your loss, and I know David is at peace and watching over you.
May you find comfort until you all meet up again one day in glory.

My dear friend Joanne and family,
Our deepest sympathy to you all. David is now watching over you, as you all
have watched over him and cared so attentively for him during this past difficult time.
Joanne, you have been such a strong person for David and your children throughout
these years and especially the last few months, you are someone to be admired. Through all of this you have been a patient, kind and nothing short of an amazing wife and mom, as I knew from you conversations at work. Christopher and Jenna you should be very proud of yourselves as you have been such wonderful help and support to you dad and mom. I know they are very proud of both of you.
In reading David's obituary, I got to understand more about this amazing and attentive father he was. Christopher and Jenna are a beautiful reflection of their amazing dad and mom. I only met Dave once or twice, but I wish I had the opportunity to have known him.
