Obituary of Walter B. Zimny

Walter Zimny, 92, of Denville, NJ and Montauk, NY died peacefully on August 29, 2015. Born and raised in the Bronx, NYC in the shadow of Yankee Stadium, he moved to Boonton, NJ over 50 years ago and has resided in Denville and Montauk since his retirement. He served proudly in WWII, enlisting in the NY National Guard then serving in the army in the European Theater, landing on Utah Beach during the Normandy campaign in June 1944. He earned five battle stars during his distinguished military career. He was employed as a research scientist at Bell Laboratories and later worked as an electrical engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in Wharton, NJ. Walter was an avid enthusiast/supporter of the US Luge Team and the Olympic Games. He participated as an official at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Ruth (Gordon) Zimny in 1966, sister Anne Chanda, and his parents George and Katherine Zimny. Walter is survived by his daughter Bettina Zimny of Montville, NJ, son Christopher Zimny and his wife Susan of Folsom, CA, son Frederic Zimny of Lake Placid, NY; three grandchildren, Alexandra, Noelle and Andrew Zimny; niece Mary Nichols and her husband Jerry, niece Carol Kershaw and her husband Richard, nephew Edward Chanda and his wife Linda and their families; his companion Marion Higgins; and many beloved family friends.
Walter also leaves behind a very special family of compassionate caregivers.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 9th at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Boonton. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 8th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Norman Dean Funeral Home, 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ. A private family burial will be held at the Fort Hill Cemetery in Montauk, NY.
Donations may be made to the Montville Animal Shelter, 195 Changebridge Rd., Montville, NJ 07045, or perform an act of kindness for someone in Walter's memory. Please leave a condolence and photographic memory for his family.
