Obituary of James P. Corbett
James P. Corbett passed away after a short illness at Capital Health Medical Center in Pennington, NJ on January 28, 2019, at the age of 92.
Born in Newark to Patrick Joseph and Sabina (Cawley) Corbett, he was one of eleven children. He moved to Ireland at the age of 3 and lived there until age 20 when he came back to the United States, proudly served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Korea & Japan from 1946 to 1949. After returning he raised his family in the Indian Lake section of Denville before moving to Delaware in 1990 and then to Toms River, NJ in 2008.
James was a devout Catholic and was known for his massive vegetable gardens. He was at his happiest in the spring when the plants emerged, the days got longer, and there were kids and pets around him in the back yard. James had a keen mind for history and could easily recall names, relatives, places, historical events with dates. Around the table he would teach the grandchildren Gaelic words and recite poetry. He worked as a machinist for Whippany Paper Board for 27 years until they closed in 1978. He then went to technical school to get his boiler license and went to work as a custodian for the Denville School system until 1990.
He was predeceased by his brothers John, Thomas, Michael and Eamon Corbett as well as his beloved wife of 59 years Mary D. (Ducey) Corbett in 2010.
James is survived by his loving sons James and his wife Antoinette of Randolph, Richard and his wife Cheryl of Plainsboro and Martin and his wife Ann of Mt. Holly, NJ. His grandchildren Jennifer, Timothy, Anne, Claire and Liam also survive him as well as his siblings Mary Cunningham of Toms River, Eileen Farrell of Ballycurrin, Ireland, Sr. Veronica Corbett of Kendall Park, NJ, Rose Corbett of Shannon, Ireland, Patrick Corbett of London, and Esther Hart of Whiting, NJ.
Visitation will be held on Saturday February 2, 2019, from 9:00 – 11:30AM at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave Denville, NJ 07834 www.normandean.com. A Liturgy of Christian Mass will follow at 12:00PM at St. Mary’s Church in Denville. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
