Hilda L. Goncalves passed away peacefully at Brightview Senior Living in Randolph NJ on Saturday, October 20, 2018. She was 92 years young.

 

Hilda was born and raised in the Ironbound section of Newark. After graduating from East Side High School, she attended the Washington School for Secretaries.  She spent most of her adult life in Newark, before moving to Bloomfield in 1986.  She moved to Randolph in 2015. 

 

Hilda was an independent "modern" woman, way ahead of her time. She spent most of her career working for the US Government at the Immigration and Naturalization department at various locations in New Jersey and New York.  After 31 years of dedicated service, she retired in 1986.  

 

Hilda will be remembered most for her intelligence, wit, warmth, and kindness.  Everyone that Hilda came in contact with appreciated her congeniality. A world traveler, Hilda had a great interest in different cultures and visited over 60 countries in her lifetime and frequently spoke about her experiences in those countries.  She also loved the Arts, was an avid reader, loved poetry,  various genres of music, watching classic movies, and attended hundreds of Broadway shows.  She kept a detailed diary of all aspects of her life and family, including a list of over 3000 books she read as an adult.  Another passion in her life was the study of wildlife, especially birds. Hilda was a very unique and special woman and she will truly be missed by all. 

 

Hilda is survived by her loving niece, Jackie Rizzo of Rockaway; her loving nephew, Joseph M. Goncalves of Parsippany and Weatherly, PA; and her loving great-nephew, Michael Rizzo of San Diego, CA.

 

She was predeceased by her parents Manuel and Joaquina Goncalves, her brother Joseph Goncalves Sr, and her sister Marie Bevacqua.

 

Public Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 27th from 10 – 11 am with Funeral Service beginning at 11 am at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ. Burial will be private at a later date.
