Obituary of William Walter Furrer

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William “Bill” Walter Furrer, of Rockaway Twp., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Boonton Care Center. He was 75 years young.

Born in Bay Shore on Long Island, NY, he was raised in Lindenhurst to the late Wilbur and Dorothy Furrer, he was one of three children. He received his Bachelor’s in Engineering from the Coast Guard Academy before proudly serving our country in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam Era. In 1965, he married the love of his life, Linda Hirschman. Once Bill was honorably discharged, he and Linda relocated to New Jersey to raise their family. He graduated from Rider University with an MBA in Business Administration. Bill was always a very hard worker. He started off his career with Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, followed by Union Camp in Wayne, and spent some time working for Allied-Signal before retiring from Sealed Air Corporation in Elmwood Park in 2008 where he was Global Director of Quality.

A well-educated man, Bill made sure to read at least one book every month since college. He also loved traveling for both business and pleasure, surf fishing, and was very into fitness, always enjoying his morning jogs. As a talented trumpet player, music was also a very big part of his life. With his wife, they raised champion German Wirehaired Pointer dogs that won in field and show competitions. He was a member of the German Wirehaired Pointer Club.

As career oriented as Bill was, he was just as big of a family man. He was very active in his children’s lives and coached them when they played basketball and baseball in school. He also made sure to play those games and remain active with his grandchildren. Family came first in his life and we will always treasure the memories we have with him.

Left to continue his legacy of hard work and unconditional love is his beloved wife of 53 years, Linda; his loving children, Kristi Oliveira and her husband Jim of Barrington, RI, Todd Furrer and his wife Carol of Stamford, CT, and Eric Furrer and his wife Ann Ayli-Furrer of Mt. Lakes; his cherished grandchildren, Holly, Willow, Blake, Aiden; his caring siblings, Tom Furrer and his wife Karen and Darlene Homire and her husband Jeffrey; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Public Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18th from 7 – 9 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 19th at 11 am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rockaway Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 35 Church Street, Rockaway.
