My deepest condolences on the loss of Grandmother or Bestemor Annelise Modafferi. Both of my parents also send their condolences.
Although I only got to know Grandmother Modafferi for less a year, during our visits in her quiet home in Long Valley I came to learn more about her as a person and become closer to her. During our visits Grandma was always kind, she always had a smile on her face, and had a great sense of humor.
I was fascinated by her family history as she and the rest of the family told stories about how she was born and grew up in Norway. Her Norwegian culture had a huge impact on the family and they have always proudly honored their Norwegian heritage.
The evening after Grandma´s passing, Mark´s mother Lisa, showed us 7 photo albums of very old family/friend photographs ranging back to the early 1900s with photos of World Wars. There were several pictures of Grandma and her family in Norway. Picture after picture of Grandma Modafferi was more and more fascinating than the last. Her natural elegance and outside beauty was matched only by her inner beauty. And as we got to the albums from the 1980s and after, it was clear that Grandma he had passed down that same elegance and beauty to each one of her children and grandchildren.
I believe there was a light inside of Grandma that was passed inside each of her family members and shines through the personality and talents that her children and grandchildren inherited from her. Whether working hard at their jobs, raising their children, cooking a Norwegian meal, and/or being there for each other, each family member carries on Grandma´s memory thru her personality defined by a unique combination of humor, candor and kindness that makes one feel at peace.
Grandma had this interesting combination of elegance and grace as well as a carefree and independent attitude all while still carrying around an air of maturity that everyone in the family respected in an unspoken manner. She was a strong woman filled with a lot of passion, will and hard work ethic. As I have been told countless times by Mark and other family members, one of Grandma´s many talents was her ability to cook special Norwegian dishes. She even built her own furniture and drove a school bus for over 30 years. Fluent in Norwegian, she was also fluent in being a strong woman, physically, mentally, and emotionally, all while maintaining an air of elegance, independence and candor.
But among all her greatness, talents and accomplishments, I believe she was most proud of her large and close family who carry the same independence and strength on their shoulders as she did. Each family member will always carry on her memory, heritage, traditions and lessons she taught them as children and adults as well parts of her personality--a strong sense of character, kindness, candor and sense of humor.
To Grandma´s family- The moment I found out about her passing, my heart dropped since I knew how close your family was to her, how special she was to everyone, and how heartbroken everyone would be. Your Grandmother was a wonderful woman and her loss was horrible. But please know that your
Grandma´s spirit lives on through each and every family member- through your beautiful faces-eyes and your kind hearts. I am honored to have met all of you and your Grandmother, even if it was only for a short time. Thank you for welcoming me with opening arms. If you ever need to talk to someone, call me anytime or message me on facebook. Finally, I am forever grateful for Mark. He is the most amazing man I ever met next to my father! I promise to take care of him and be there for him especially through this tough time.
God bless to all and Rest in Peace Bestemor!
With Love,
Erin and the Bruno Family
