Dear Uncle Ernie,
I want to address this note directly to you with the hope that wherever you are, you will get a sense of this.
I never had the courage to say this to your face. But it never failed to make me chuckle thinking of you as a sailor aboard a ship during WWII. I knew you were constantly surrounded by danger, especially aboard an oil tanker in the Pacific theater. But what I always associated with you - a quintessential, flirtatious Zoppi male - was the song sequence from the movie "South Pacific". And in my imagination, you were always gleefully, and irrepressibly, belting out "There is nothing like a dame....."
So, wherever you are at rest and peace now, I hope you will chortle from knowing that I shall always cherish this lasting image of you........
Love always,
Your niece-by-marriage Vini Handler

I am very saddened by the loss of my Uncle Ernie.
As a kid growing up in Newark and Maplewood, I can always remember him stopping by our home. He would talk for hours and share food with my mother, father, and sister. The stories often turned to his experiences in WW2 were he served on a oil tanker in the Pacific --- an extremely dangerous mission. But he, like all those of the "Greatest Generation" served with honor to defeat evil. Whenever I hear the incredibly beautiful music from the musical "South Pacific", I will be continually reminded of my dear uncle Ernie.
I also remember well that he invited me numerous times to his beach house where we had great fun just hanging out. These were different times when most people I knew led quieter lives, and enjoyed the simpler pleasures of life.
I can recall last year when my family visited him , that he had a picture of himself boarding a plane destined for Italy with Aunt Eddie. I commented that he and my aunt reminded me of two movie stars (perhaps Cary Grant and Sofia Loren). His reaction was "Bobby, your exaggerating!". But the picture harkened back to a better time in our country.
I will never forget you, my wonderful Uncle Ernie,
Your Nephew, Bob

The good memories of my Uncle Ernie go back many years. But recent years hold the most meaning. I looked forward to my trips up to NJ to visit with Ernie. He welcomed me and we absolutely enjoyed our visits. We ate in the dining hall at the large round table surrounded by his friends at Franciscan Oaks. Wine was shared among all. These were the simplest pleasures, with good company and good cheer. I knew, as I sat there, that you cannot put a price on moments such as these.
Ernie was never without legions of friends, wherever he went. Ernie and Edith travelled the world (especially Italy!) much more than most people dream of, and they always lived well and celebrated life and family.
He was there for his brothers and sisters, and saw us through many a difficult time.
He will be so very greatly missed.
Be at peace, beloved uncle.
Niece Jan

Uncle Ernie always added fun into family gatherings - with his easy going demeanor, his relaxed style, his ready acceptance of different people and his sense of humor.
I am grateful for our visit with him last Summer in Denville. After a wonderful Southern Italian lunch at a local diner, he regaled us with stories and photos from his and Aunt Edie's lives, as we all sipped a glass of Neopolitan limoncello. So evocative of a by-gone era, when everyone seemed so much better dressed, elegant in style and well mannered.....
Quite unknowingly, Uncle Ernie also helped me process a shocking and cruel recent loss of my beloved sister - by showing me the rich and full life he had built after losing his wife....and the possibilities life gives to those who are open to them.......
I miss you already, Uncle Ernie - Vini Handler
