Obituary of Rodolfo Deyro Narag
Please share a memory of Rodolfo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rodolfo Deyro Narag, M.D. of Mountain Lakes, N.J. entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 11.
Born in Fort McKinley in the Philippines, Dr. Narag was the third of eleven children. Graduating early from high school, he pursued an accelerated undergraduate program at San Juan de Letran College in Manila, then earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1963.
He immigrated to the United States in 1964, completing an internship at Elizabeth General Hospital. It was here that he met his future wife Dolores, a registered nurse. They married in 1966, the same year he completed his general practice residency at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Reading, PA. They moved to Philadelphia, where Dr. Narag completed residencies in anesthesia at Albert Einstein Medical Center and Children's Hospital. After working as an anesthesia instructor at Albert Einstein, Dr. Narag was hired in 1969 as an anesthesiologist at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. Later that year he became the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia at Riverside Hospital in Boonton. In 1976 he accepted the position of Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia at Saint Clare's Hospital in Denville, a position he held until 1993, when he turned his professional focus to pain management and established the first pain management center at Saint Clare's-Riverside Medical Center.
Dr. Narag was a founding member and past president of the Philippine-American Medical Society of New Jersey. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner at Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Mountain Lakes from 1971 until his passing.
An avid golfer, he was a member of Rockaway River Country Club in Denville for forty years. A popular figure and always quick with a good joke, he also introduced fellow golfers to the "triple" and "quadruple press" on the back nine. One season he won back-to-back golf tournaments two days apart: the Governors Cup at Rockaway River and the Saint Clare's Saints Open.
Dr. Narag is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Dolores, sons Gregory, Christian (Tracy), Brian and daughter Kara Narag Falivene (Peter), his beloved grandsons Nicholas, Vincent, Christian and Anthony and his grand-dog Jet. He is also survived by his brothers Marciano, Bernardo, Tirso, and Leonardo, and his sisters Teresita Narag Bautista, Evelyn "Ruby" Narag Nicolas, Abella Narag Tolmasoff and Milagros Narag Pagkalinawan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews across the United States and the Philippines. He was predeceased by brothers Emmanuel Jr. and Eduardo, and his faithful grand-dog Oreo.
Funeral services will begin at 9AM on Thursday January 14, 2016, at Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave Denville, NJ 07834, and then going to St. Catherine of Siena Church in Mt. Lakes for a 10AM Liturgy of Christian Burial Mass. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-7PM.
