Lee, or Mom Clifford as she preferred to be called, was an amazing person, incredible cook, and a light in our lives. I remember dinners at her house - her meatballs were delectable, as was everything else. She had a magic touch with her home, always making it welcoming and warm. Everything was special there - Christmas was almost a Norman Rockwell painting and I have so many fond memories of holidays and everyday times. Annie loved her broth with pastina when she was little and Mom Clifford made it for her every time she came to visit. As a toddler, Bethie loved the way she could run through the living room, hang a left at the kitchen, through the dining room and straight back into the living room - again and again until she finally ran out of steam! I remember when Brian and Keith built the back porch and closed in the walkway to the kitchen - she was so happy to be able to take the food out to the screened-in porch in the summer. Mom Clifford made the everyday events special - I remember once bringing her pizza so she wouldn't have to cook, and she added a salad, special drinks and dessert - so much for making it easy on her!! Her family was her world and there was nothing she wouldn't do for them. Mom Clifford will live on in our hearts.

She was always "Aunt Lee" to me - my father's sister "Lena," the baby in the family. Having grown up in Brooklyn, a couple of blocks from where she and my father had, it was always a treat to visit her and the family. The holiday meals were, as Brian has recounted, vast spreads that seemed to never end. And once everybody had digested dinner, there was a supper later in the evening. Living in a cramped apartment, these visits were like going through the looking glass. Playing in a basement with the cousins, etc. For all the great food she prepared, the thing that sticks with me from childhood were her cherry tarts! Oh, how I loved them.
She was a confidante to my mother as well, as only two women who share a deep understanding of one person could be. And when my mother died in 1982, she became my confidante. Every time I saw her, she would hug me and kiss me, reminding us that I was one the few blood relatives she had left. She was thrilled at the birth of my daughter and, each time we would see her she would almost yell "WHERE IS MY DRINA??!!" She adored her children - though maybe not as much as her grandchildren! She was always so grateful for her neighbors (Fred and Linda, I believe). More than anything in life, she loved her family and those who loved her. She would be gratified to know the extent to which she will be missed.

Re: Lee Clifford
In the 1960's educators in training were taught that "teachers affect eternity." So too do good school secretaries. A generation of Main St. School kids, and a few lucky ones at Riverview School well remember the kind smiling face and the warm hugs of that woman between them and the sometimes scary principal. Those little personal touches probably made a difference for more kids than we will ever know.
On the home front she was the "always there" person in the lives of her children, and later her grandchildren. All those holiday and celebratory gatherings presided over with apron and wooden spoon in hand. Often we were treated to Italian dishes, the recipes being handed down from her immigrant mother. As is the custom with Italians, one never left the table having room for even one more bite.
As said in Ecclesiastes, there is a time for everything.... One is dancing, an activity Lee loved until arthritis sidelined her. Her close companion of over 25 years, Leon, and she tore up the dance floors in innumerable mid-Jersey venues.
All of her friends, and those family of her generation have predeceased her, but they will probably join us in spirit as we say good-bye.
And so, Lee, Mom, Nana we return your smiles and hugs and thank you for the time you spent with us. God speed and love.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. She was such a lovely lady. I got to
know her through my mom (Phyllis Corsi)...she was ALWAYS so sweet and kind to me.
And I might add that because of her, I got my first teaching job and Riverview School in
1967....all it took was a "good word" from Lee to Mr. Spinola and I was hired! She was very special and loved by all who knew her.
Please know that you all are in my thoughts and in my heart at this sad time.
