Obituary of Helen Adeline Cobb
Helen Cobb passed away peacefully, in Morris Plains, New Jersey, on Thursday August 15th, 2024. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many.
She was born in Hammond, Indiana on August 5th, 1925. Helen grew up in Hammond, graduating early from high school and earning a scholarship to attend Purdue University. She completed her BS with a major in Chemistry, and also served as president of her sorority, Alpha Xi. Shortly after graduating, her childhood friend James Cobb returned from the war. It wasn’t long before her childhood friend turned into the love of her life. They married and had four daughters. James’ work required many moves, which allowed the family to experience different parts of the country together including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, North Carolina and California before they settled in Rockaway, New Jersey.
Helen worked at Dover High School for thirty years, first as a math teacher and then as a guidance counselor, before retiring. Helen always enjoyed traveling and visited the United States, Europe, Russia, and Africa. She was an avid reader and solved New York Times crossword puzzle every day. Throughout her life she joined bridge clubs, book clubs, women’s college clubs and others. She filled her home with her needlework, knitting, and crocheted pieces. She was always generous to her family and friends. She was a remarkable woman who will be missed.
The people that knew Helen will remember her as a kind and caring woman who was fiercely dedicated to her family. Though we are all saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her husband James and her daughter Jean Cobb, who preceded her in death.
We now look to those Helen leaves behind to carry on her memory of love and kindness. Her survivors include her daughters, Susan (Deane Perkins) Cobb, Barbara (Blair Perkins) Cobb, and Janet (Dennis) Wachs; her cherished grandchildren, Matthew Borie (Jill Kay), Forrest Borie (Frances Lazare), and Julia Lederer (Colton); her new great-grandson, Asher Lederer; and many more extended family and friends.
All services for Helen Cobb are private at this time. You may light a candle, leave a condolence, or share your favorite memory of Helen here to continue to celebrate her life.
