Obituary of Michael W. Scanlon

Michael William Scanlon, a beloved husband and father, entered the gates of heaven on March 30th, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will forever reside in the hearts of those who knew him. He was the eldest son of the late William and Marie Scanlon. He leaves behind his wife Kathy, children Colleen and Grayson as well as his siblings Pat (John), Dan (Jean) and Bill (Diane).

Mike spent his younger years as a proud member of the Indian Lake swim team, as well as a lifeguard at the Indian Lake beaches. He then continued to serve his community with the Denville Fire Department. After 20 years of service, he retired from the Morris County Sheriff’s Office – Department of Corrections as a Sergeant. He was the President of the Superior’s Office Association as well as a member of PBA 298.

Mike was a self-taught guitarist; he shared his passion for music with his best friends who were also members of the various bands throughout high school and beyond. His walls adorned with records, CDs, and tapes bore witness to his profound appreciation for music, a passion he joyously shared with his loved ones.

An avid outdoorsman and hunter of 52 years, Mike found solace in the beauty of nature. He loved hunting and fishing but also loved to explore nature during his cross-country road trips, excursions to Yellowstone National Park and cherished beach days with family. His adventurous spirit extended to camping, long family road trips, Disney World and beyond, where he reveled in creating magical memories with his children.

Mike’s dedication to his cabin transformed it into a cherished retreat that will forever echo with the love of his family. As one of the founding members of the Ringdale Raiders, he leaves behind a rich legacy of camaraderie and joy, ensuring that the bonds of friendship he forged will endure for generations to come.

Beyond his love for music and nature, Mike was a vigilant protector of his family, ensuring their safety and well-being with meticulous care. His selflessness, loyalty, and unwavering dedication will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched.

Mike's memory will be cherished as he will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his wit and competitive spirit.

Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 11^th from 5 – 7 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Avenue, Denville. Burial will be held on Friday, April 12^th at St. Vincent Martyr Cemetery, Crestview Ave. & Noe Ave., Madison, NJ 07940.
