Dear Tom, Richard and the whole family,
Henry and Claire were decades-long good friends of my late wife Eva and myself. We had so many common memories between us, with teaching, children, culture... His spontaneous fine humor entertained us on every visit, of which we had many at Cedar Lake. Henry's and Claire's hospitality was warm and generous. They were always so positive, never saying a bad word about anybody; a true example to follow. More recently, our children, Mary and Ilona also enjoyed Henry's company, walks together from the Oaks [and his humor]. I was a great admirer of his beautiful woodworking and his technical knowledge and good advice in so many areas. We all admired his heroism during WW II, and the interesting stories he told us. Admission to the Legion d'Honneur was such a well-deserved reward. The celebration of his 100th birthday with so many of you, the loving family, was so memorable to us. My Mary and Ilona [who wrote earlier] and I will cherish Henry's and Claire's memory as long as we live. Thank you, good friends!

We tried to capture the essence of our love for Henry on a poem my family wrote for his 100th birthday.
Happy birthday to Henry
Since we lived away from home
We’d get the scoop from our parents over the phone
We’d discuss the news, the weather
Books we'd read, or just whatever
And then it seemed that Henry and Claire
Had swooped in, as if out of nowhere
Imaginary friends out of thin air
Who suddenly seemed to be everywhere
Claire was consulted on every topic
And Henry it seemed was very “shopic”
They had wisdom to share on places to go
Things to build and people to know
Come use our canoe and visit our lake
Here’s wood for the kids let's see what they make
Henry loves history just like our boys
And shares all about what he knows
When he tells a story he makes you feel
Like you’re reliving something real
We've all been blessed to have you as our friend
And though life has not gone exactly as planned
Three cheers for your big celebration today
Wishing things all go exactly your way

Richard and Tom - I have such wonderful memories of your Dad, especially during the past 29 years of Veterans Day activities in Denville Schools. He was always such a gentleman and loved talking to the students. I will miss him and offer you my condolences.

Mr. Patterson was a Boy Scout Leader of Troop 17 in Denville. My son, Dale was a Boy Scout of the Troop, he became an Eagle Scout. Later he moved to VA. married and had 3 boys, all of which became Eagle Scouts. Dale continued his scouting with the Troop , he was awarded the Bronze Pelican by the Diocese of Arlington for his contributions to Catholic Scouting. This would not have been possible if not for all the Leadership that Mr. Patterson had given him. He often spoke very highly of him. My son passed away in Feb. he was buried in his Boy Scout uniform. I am a Proud Eagle Scout Mother. Dorothy Hamilton

Uncle Henry and Aunt Claire were a special core to our family that will be lovingly missed. The lake house in Denville is full of warm memories of two great people and their ability to gather many people that loved them. A recent moment I hold with love is traveling through the northeast with my partner last summer and getting a chance to stop in and visit with Henry. We shared some ice cream from his favorite shop, and he gifted us one of his famous cutting boards (that he was still making at 99!). We spent the ride home talking about how cool he is. From his age of 100 to his long loving marriage, and his legacy of kindness, Uncle H spent a life well lived. He will be remembered and missed by many.

" Uncle Henry " was to me , as what Mr. Patterson was to all of you. Always that big smile and those open arms which just surrounded you in a warm hug.
He was always interested in what was happening in
Your life and readied to hear all about it.
Many years ago I had to go to Boston , to see a neurosurgeon about an upcoming surgery.
I'm not sure how the Dr put A and B together but
Uncle Henry taught him at your HS . He went on to say about time spent with the students, patience ,
Many of the tributes he needed to be successful as a
noted neurosurgeon.
After we returned home , Uncle Henry called me
One day to say. he received a beautiful gift.
He received a thank you note from this noted Dr ,
thanking him for all the gifts he had taught him
during his years in HS .
Such an amazing man , who showed us that one of the best gifts we can give to each other is heartfelt
presence and simple kindness.
Much love , Inge Veneziano

I had Mr. Patterson in eighth grade at Ridgedale School, in 1966. I never forgot him. Who could?
He really took the time with each and every one of us, for teaching was in his heart. He was one of the last great teachers of the era.

I have many memories of wood shop class at Ridgedale School in Florham Park, sometime between Fall 1971 and Spring 1974, but one stands out in particular. One of the students had hair past his shoulders (very different than the rest of us) - Hank the Plank of course had his trademark flat-top (we used to joke that he achieved the perfect flat-top look by cutting his hair on the edge joiner). Hank went out of his way to congratulate this student as he had his long hair carefully secured behind his head so as not to get caught in the woodworking equipment. Remeber the tumult of the times - even at that age I knew Hank was trying to teach us something beyond shop safety; not only don't judge people by their appearance but that someone who appears different from you could be acting more appropriately than you. I have never forgotten that. Harry Stamateris

Mr Patterson was my shop teacher for two years from 1978-1980. He was very kind and patient. I still have my cedar jewelry box I made in his class and I remember him selecting a very pretty piece of burled wood for the top. My sincerest condolences to his family. He was a special man. RIP.
