Obituary of Alice A. Mendelsohn
Alice A. Mendelsohn passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville. She had shared 89 years of unconditional love, infectious laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.
Alice was born in Carbondale, PA to the late David and Alice (Roche) McMyne. She was raised alongside her brother, Joe, in Kearny, NJ by the late Leo and Alice (Roche) Gerris. She graduated from Kearny High School, Class of 1952, before beginning her impressive career. In this lifetime, Alice was a Secretary, Wife, Mom, Poet, Published Author, and talented Musician. During her years as a Secretary, she had worked for the Mayor of Denville and the Morris County Board of County Commissioners. She married John H. Mendelsohn in 1968 and the happy couple settled into Irvington before growing their family and finding their forever home in Denville on West Glen Road. Alice retired in 2000 which allowed her the opportunity to explore other vocations.
A proud, published Author, Alice has published two books, It’s Time and Let’s Celebrate. She was an accomplished poet, writing something almost every day. Her happy place was at any book or poetry reading. She always walked in with a bright smile, looking her very best, with her hair styled perfectly. She was a writer for her hometown newspaper, The Citizen and the Rock Ridge Newsletter. She was also a gifted violinist, loved to sing and dance, and was an avid bowler. Alice had a deep faith in God; she took Him with her everywhere she went. She was an active member of the Denville Community Church, the Denville Senior Citizens, Women Who Write, and the Morning Muses. She would also volunteer to lend a helping hand to others around town who needed it. Alice was always eager for an adventure and if she was present, everyone would be having fun. She was a staple at Cooks Pond Beach in Denville and her favorite place to visit was New Orleans, LA. She truly was a remarkable woman!
Although we are saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her beloved husband, Jack, her parents, and her brother, Joseph McMyne. She leaves a lifetime of joyful memories to her adored children, Carol Coulther and her husband Richard, John Mendelsohn and his wife Susan, and Larry Mendelsohn and his wife Holly; her treasured grandchildren, Rachel and Tim Coulther, Ragan, Michael and Dana Mendelsohn, and Jake, Luke, and Marcela Mendelsohn; and a wealth of extended family and friends.
Public Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 16th from 4 - 8 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Avenue, Denville. Funeral Service will take place on Thursday, August 17th at 10 am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow immediately at Denville Cemetery, Savage Road, Denville. Memorial Donations are being accepted in Alice's memory to the Denville Police and Fire Department by way of www.inmemof.org to ensure receipt of your donation. Please leave a condolence, light a candle, and share your favorite memory of Alice here to continue to celebrate her life and let her light shine.
