Obituary of Maxine K. Hunt
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maxine Hunt, a long-time resident of Washington Borough who passed away on July 4th, 2023 in the comfort of her home.
Maxine was born in October of 1935 to Meyer and Beatrice (Laderman) Kushner in Hollywood California. After a few years, the family returned to Paterson, New Jersey, where Meyer operated a grocery store on 12th Avenue. Maxine had fond memories of the neighborhood and living behind the store, which featured a soda fountain, candy counter, and pinball machine. Her mother worked as a nurse at Paterson General Hospital.
Maxine attended Paterson Eastside High School and decided to continue her education at Montclair State University, eventually earning her Master’s Degree in Social Studies and Education. She used this degree to become a teacher; a career she was most proud of. She worked in many schools, including Belleville School No. 10 (1957-1958), Mt. Pleasant Elementary School (1967-1977), and Bonnie-Brae (1977-2001). She also served as an aide at the Franklin Branch of the Warren County Library System, as well as a founding member of the Montclair Co-op Nursery School. With all this passion for education and caring for children, it was no surprise that Maxine decided to bring three of her own into the world. She raised her children in Montclair, New Jersey, before making the move to Washington Borough. In her free time, Maxine was an avid reader. She was a part of many book clubs and was always searching for new reading material. She also enjoyed doing the New York Times crossword puzzles, watching her beloved Sci-Fi movies, and catching the latest Yankees game on the radio. Maxine was a very independent and strong woman, and even in her final days she maintained and lived in her own home.
Though her passing brings us great sorrow, we know that she is reunited with those who passed before her, including son, Timothy Sean Hunt, parents, Meyer and Beatrice Kushner, and former husband, Donald Hunt. We look now to her loved ones that she leaves behind to carry on her legacy of kindness and independence for years to come. Her survivors include daughters, Marcia Goldberg (Greg Payne), and Laura Fulloon (Don), grandchildren, Ben Goldberg (Amy), Sarah Cecere (Matthew), JD Fulloon and Sean Fulloon, great grandchildren Asher and Lilah Goldberg and cousin Louise White.
Her dear friends, coworkers, and neighbors will remember Maxine fondly. If you would like to contribute to her memory in your own way, please consider making a donation to a charity that she was passionate about, the Shriners Hospitals for Children by way of www.inmemof.org. Please also leave a condolence, light a candle, or share your favorite memory of Maxine here to continue to celebrate her life and let her light shine.
A graveside service for Maxine will be held on Friday, July 7th, at 2 PM at Riverside Cemetery, located at 12 Market St, Saddle Brook, NJ 07663.
