Obituary of John J. Hannagan

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John J. Hannagan passed away peacefully Friday March 3, 2023 at Chilton Medical Center in Pequannock, New Jersey. He had shared 84 years of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

John was born and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan to the late John Patrick Hannagan and Mary Alice Hannagan. He attended Incarnation Grammar School then graduated from Chelsea Career and Technical High School. Afterwards, he served in the U.S. Navy. Upon his Honorable Discharge, John started his career with Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) where he worked for 43 years, and retired while working in the Manhattan Gas Operations Surveillance Division of the company. Prior to his service in the Navy, John met the love of his life, Violet; they wed in 1967 and eventually settled in New Jersey.

John was truly one of a kind with a great sense of humor who could garner a smile with just a facial gesture. He was also a gentle giant who was humble and kind. He had many hobbies, including baking, photography, and woodworking. He was also an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. We are better people for having had John in our lives. Although we are saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that he is out of pain and now reunited with his parents.

He leaves only joyful memories to his beloved wife of 55 years, Violet; his caring children, Kerry Walsh (John) and John Hannagan (Siobhan); his cherished grandchildren Mary, Maureen, Jackie, John, and Liam; his loving sister, Florence “Flo” Drews (Ritchie); and many more dear nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
