Obituary of Harvey Nathan Altman

Please share a memory of Harvey to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Harvey was born 82 years ago to Morris and Elsie Altman of Newark, New Jersey. He graduated Weequahic High School and continued his education in music at Montclair State University, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree. Eventually he moved onto New York University for a Principal’s Certificate and Masters’ Degree.

Other than his family being first in his heart, he “lived and breathed” working for Hanover Township  Schools, in particular at Memorial Jr. School; at first their instrumental music teacher, then Vice Principal and then earning the title of Principal. Spending each year, 32 years in all, at the New Jersey School of Conversation with all the sixth graders was definitely a highlight for every one involved and will not be forgotten.

“Career Day,” involving parents and citizens, who came into classes to enhance a subject with expert knowledge also was a wonderful creation, especially to have Bill Bradley, Janice Huff, and Scott Rollins, who is a secret service agent at the White House. Scott Rollins took off his medal from around his neck and put it around Harvey’s neck to serve as a memory from when he attended the school. Harvey wore that medal until his passing.

Harvey was a member of the National and Morris County Associations of Elementary School Principals and Supervisors and served on the drug abuse council and committee on juvenile delinquency. He also was a guest speaker in Trenton regarding bullying and gun control.

He spent 540 years at Memorial Jr. School, loving working with his team of administrators and, of course, teachers and support staff members. To quote a team member, “It’s no surprise that Harv started out in music education. He had many different voices to hear and always knew how to blend them together to create a masterpiece!!”

Though Harvey Altman’s passing brings us great sorrow, we take comfort in knowing that he lives on through the words and actions of those he leaves behind. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Jan, his amazing daughter, Laurie, his predeceased daughter, Debbie, his precious Maltese, Maggie Pie, his blessed Rabbi, his team members, Memorial Jr. School graduates, and a wealth of families and friends who were fortunate enough to have known him.
