Obituary of Virginia Barkoff

Please share a memory of Virginia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Virginia Barkoff passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Friday, February 3, 2023 at Merry Heart Assisted Living in Succasunna. She had shared 98 years of unconditional love, infectious laughter, and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

Born in Dover, NJ to the late Harry and Anna Faircloth, Virginia and her three sisters had a wonderful childhood, growing up in Dover and Mine Hill. Virginia was very intelligent; she graduated from Dover High School, Class of 1941. She married her best friend, Leonard Eugene Barkoff in 1944. The happy couple settled into Denville to begin a family of their own. Virginia thrived being a wife and mother. When she wasn’t doting on her family or taking care of the house, you could find her outside in her yard tending to her beautiful flower landscape. When her husband passed in 1964, Virginia officially joined the workforce. She was a successful Real Estate Agent for a decade, having worked with Century 21 in Rockaway and Guide Realty in Denville. She continued to work administratively until age 78. A devout Catholic, she was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Church in Denville for over 50 years before retiring to Fox Hills for 20 years and supporting St. Bernard Parish in Wharton.

Virginia was truly one of a kind. Her favorite pastime was taking joy rides with family through the country; she would never turn down a road trip to Vermont and made sure it was an annual event every fall to truly admire the stunning foliage. A social butterfly, Virginia enjoyed going on golf outings with her daughter and sister, Helen. She also loved playing Mahjong with anyone who accepted the challenge. Although we are saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her beloved husband, Leonard, her parents, and her sisters, Helen Faircloth and Betty Anne Secco.

She leaves only joyful memories to her adored daughter and son-in-law, Karen and John Maguire of Stanhope; her loving sister, Kathleen (the late Louis) Deona; her caring nieces and nephews, Cathy Kelly, David Deona, Susan Secco, and Michele Triantos; and her cherished grand-niece and grand-nephew, James and Katie.

Public Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 8th from 11 am – 12 pm with Funeral Service beginning at 12 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Avenue, Denville, NJ. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Please leave a condolence, light a candle, or share your favorite memory of Virginia here to continue to celebrate the incredible life she bestowed upon us.
