Joe Tarallo, WVHS class of 1979 posted a condolence
Tuesday, January 31, 2023
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Lash. He was my AP Calculus AB and BC teacher at Wayne Valley from 1977-1979. He was an outstanding teacher and wonderful person who really cared about every student. He had a gift for explaining difficult concepts and taught us hints I still remember to this day (like visualizing a "wet noodle" following along a graph). I felt totally prepared to take the advanced math classes when I went to engineering school after graduation. He was also the force behind computer education in the town, and pushed to get our own HP 2000 computer installed in the school. He offered me the privilege of helping him do software backups and system maintenance early in the mornings before classes started, which I gratefully accepted. He will be missed by all.

I vividly remember Chief Gerry Lash as I was a young 13 year old with aspirations of becoming a firefighter. As a junior member of the Denville Volunteer Fire Department, he gave me the opportunity to study fire dynamics and allowed me to train with the members of the department.
I moved to Jacksonville FL for family reasons and my life was in turmoil from leaving the department, but Chief Gerry Lash sent me a letter of recommendation that I presented to the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department. With over thirty years of service I retired and moved on to my dream position as a Fire Chief in Indiana.
Chief Lash was not only a friend to me, but a mentor. He challenged me in a way that the fire service always preaches and that is Taken Care Of Our Own!
Thank you for your friendship and for filling a young mans dreams Chief. I will never forget you sir.
My condolences go to the family and my prayers are with you.

Gerry was the fire chief just as I was coming in to the department in 1971. He brought a high level of technical expertise with the operation of the trucks and the pumping needs which we were fortunate to have in a volunteer department.
Many of us got to know him better at the Wildwood Conventions and we had some great conversations about all sorts of subjects.
Our department was very fortunate to have him as a chief and an active member who contributed so much.
My condolences go out to the entire Lash family.

Hello, I’m a former student of Mr. Lash (Wayne Valley class of ‘80). He was my favorite teacher. I spent two years in his calculus classes and appreciates the way he made the practical aspects of mathematics so much a part of his teaching. My condolences to his loving family.

... and, alas, he is off to The Infinity Motel about which he "taught" us. I do, though, have one last question for you, Mr. Lash, "But is it reeeeasonable?"
You were much appreciated, Mr. Lash, for Calculus I (AB) in 81-82 and for Calculus II (BC) in 82-83. Thank you!
Prayers are with you and your family.

Jerry I will always remember fighting you for the clams at the FD picnics. Best quote when I was very young, you told me, “If you are going to eat clams you have to learn to open them, no one is going to do it for you.” You will be missed love Jane Crothers Jones

My condolences to the family. Mr Lash was one of the best at Wayne Valley HS in my opinion. Very progressive and smart. A real visionary. As head of the math dept I think it was his doing to commence a computer programming class, which I took. We time-shared over the telephone lines via a modem with a main frame computer at a local bank. We could even take home for the weekend the programming terminal, which was the size of a large chair and took up the entire rear of our white Pontiac station wagon.
(that same arrangement of time-sharing with a local bank mainframe was how Microsoft founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen did the early coding of the Windows operating system).
I knew he had been in the USAF, but did not know about his other activities which I was very impressive. The country has always depended on teachers and men like Gerald Lash and we could sure use more right now.

My sincerest condolence to Marge and Gerry's family. Gerry was my department chairmen when I transferred from Anthony Wayne MS to Wayne Valley HS. We had many laughs and played many jokes on each other. One of his favorites was to sneak up behind me and poke me in the ribs and make me squeal at faculty meetings while the principal was talking. Mine was to leave him something to make him laugh in my plan book when he came to observe me. He was a kind department chairmen as he just laughed when one time I opened my closet door and a can of paint fell out and spilled over the floor... he laughed and resheduled. But we all knew to get out of the way if he was walking down the hallway taking large strides and huffing. That meant someone was in troubled and we all prayed it wasn't us. Many many good memories of a wonderful man. The memories will live on.

Gerry hired me in 1981 and was a very supportive Department Chairman, mentor and friend. Gerry was confident and that confidence was passed on to his staff. I am grateful to him for the advice and conversations we had in the Math office at Wayne Valley (both light and serious) and will always remember him fondly.
I send my sincere condolences to Marge and the entire family in this time of grief. May Gerry's memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Lash was my Calculus teacher my senior year at Wayne Valley in 1974/75. He helped set me on my path through engineering school at Duke. He was a great teacher and a nice person. I’m super impressed that he built his own house and would have loved to seen what sounds like a wonderful place.
My condolences go out to his family and especially my former German teacher “Fraulein Link”.

It is wiith great sadness that I leave my condolance to the family and friends of Gerry. He and I were colleages at Wayne Valley
High School where we thought togather for more than thirty years. I have always respected his intellect and fairness in his
leadership as a Deparment Chairman. We both served in the Air Force for four years and within that time a tour in Thule Air Base
in Greenland. We have both been retired for a long time and spent many monthly lunches together to recap our memories teaching
and serving in the military. I have the greatest respect for Gerry. He was a wonderful friend and a person we could model our life.
I will greatly miss him.
