Obituary of Gladys Mae Smolko

Please share a memory of Gladys to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

"At that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my Angel Mother.”

Gladys Mae Smolko passed following a brief illness on Sunday, June 19, 2022.  She shared 85 years of love and faith with her family. Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, June 25th from 2 – 4 pm at the Norman Dean Home For Services, Denville.   A service will begin at 4 o’clock.  Gladys was an avid gardener and loved her flowers, which would be certainly welcome at the service. For anyone who wishes to make a donation in her honor, please consider The National Wildlife Federation.

Gladys was born in Munson, Pa, which she always called home. She was one of four children to bless Clyde and Jennie (nee Davis) Williams.  She met John Smolko, fell in love, and married on November 10, 1956.  They settled in Denville where they raised their three daughters.  She had a lifelong career in the medical field.

Gladys was a wonderful wife and mother.  She was always involved in the girl’s activities and worked hard with John to give their family a beautiful life.  Her proudest role came years later when she was crowned “Grammy”.  This has always been her favorite title.  She has doted on her four grandchildren since the moment she knew they were coming.  She loved to garden and kept beautiful bountiful flower beds.  Something was always in bloom at Grammy’s home.  Her family was the center of her universe. Although we are broken hearted, we take comfort in knowing we have another guardian Angel watching & guiding us.

Predeceased by her daughter Cynthia Smolko (2010) and her husband John (2017); she leaves joyful memories to her daughters Doreen Caruk (Michael) and Sherry Ostensen; her grandchildren Paul Ostensen Jr., Kimberly Smethy (David), Jon Ostensen and Karlie Caruk (Michael Alecci); her dear brother Ronald Williams; and many more loving family, friends, and neighbors. Her siblings Ambrose and Nancy passed before her.
