Al was one of the nicest, caring people that I ever met. He did so much to develop young men in the Boy Scouts and was a true leader, but more important, a special friend to all who needed him. He was especially kind to my family through the years. I will miss seeing and talking to him. My deepest condolences to you, Marilyn, and to your family.

Al was a man of true character: loyalty, integrity, and honor. What a perfect role model for the hundreds of scouts that he mentored! My father always called him "Albert." He was one of Dad's first students at Main Street School and one of his best. Dad was always proud of Albert and was thrilled when he served on the Denville Board of Education. Dad used to tell me, "Albert was always a gentleman and always made decisions for the good of the children he served." Dad considered Albert a true friend which he remained until the end of Dad's life in 2010. Now they are together to renew their friendship!

When I learned of Als passing a flood of memories and emotions came over me. I remembered when Al and Bob Freudenberg talked me out of qutting the troop. I am eternally grateful for that and as an adult I was able to thank him for that. My best memories of childhood come from being in the troop! Its almost like they knew. I left the troop at 17 ,didnt make eagle but I carried my scout education into real life and it did make a difference. Life happens and I lost contact with the troop. 12 years ago my son joined troop 17. What do you know Al Green was still the man ! I signed up to be an assistant scoutmaster. Now I was serving with Al and was one of the highpoints of my life .I enjoyed the campouts with Al talking about those memories. Al loved the toy soldiers shows and asked me to give him a hand at the shows setting up. Of all the people he knew he asked me . I was always proud of that . Im sure my stories about Al are very similar to many others! He will always be one of the Greats. I missed him when i moved and still do.Thanks for everything Al. Happiness is being one of Als Scouts! Your friend and scout, Ray Gronemann

News of Al's death brought both sadness and warm memories. It's been 53 years since I left Denville, but the years I spent in Troop 17 were memorable. Al's leadership was superb. I learned much from him that helped me in my professional and personal life as I lived and worked in Idaho, Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa. I still use knots he taught me to tie, but his biggest gift was demonstrating how to interact cordially and cooperatively with people. He was a perfect mentor. His family is in my thoughts.

Al was without a doubt one of the most influential persons in my life. As one of the 100 plus Eagle Scouts of Troop 17 I listened to Al's advise. He insisted that we scouters uphold the ideals of scouting and community service. My Dad and brother also benefited from knowing and serving with Al in the troop. There are untold hundreds whose lives were changed from knowing Al Green. Thanks just doesn't do it.

There isn't anyone who could make apple or cherry coobler in a dutch oven any better that Al Green. I have many, many memories of listenening to Al tell stories of Scouting in the olden days. His persistence and fortitude to be Scoutmaster of Denville Troop 17 for 60 years is simply amazing. We do have Marilyn to thank for sharing Al with us for weekly scout meetings and to many weekend camping trips to count. He taught hundreds of scouts the importance of key skills like first aid, cooking and being responsible. He enjoyed sharing his hobby and collection of lead figurines with the scouts when we talked about Collections MB. Troop 17 scouts and leaders will miss Mr. Green sorely. Listen now as nightfall is upon us...the soft sound of Taps playing as you now take your eternal rest.
To Marilyn and the Green family, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of greiving. May the memories of a life well-led fill your heart and mind at this time. With love...Douglas Gabel
