Obituary of Emil E. Szot

Please share a memory of Emil to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

"It is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced.

             -Tom Brokaw

Emil E. Szot passed peacefully on Saturday, November 7, 2020.  He shared 92 years of love with his family.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 10 am at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway, NJ.  Interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, Nov. 11th from 3-6 pm at the funeral home.

Emil was born in Passaic in 1928 and was one of five children to bless the Szot family.  At the young age of 17, he signed up with the US Marines and proudly served our country during WWII.  Being a product of the greatest generation, he knew the values of hard work and a dollar- to name a few.  In 1962 he married his sweetheart Barbara Hart and they settled in Rockaway Township.  With a growing family, Emil worked hard to build a good life.  He was a loving husband and a proud Dad.  He retired in 1996 after many years of service with Papermart and Vornado.

As the years passed, Emil became the doting “Pop” to fourteen little ones.  He adored all of his grandchildren and was fortunate to have them all close by.  In his spare time, he stayed active with St. Clements Church and was active with the Seniors of St. Cecilia’s.  He enjoyed all of the activities, trips and friendships he made along the way.  He served with the Knights of Columbus, was a lifetime member with the Denville VFW and was a member of the Rockaway American Legion.  He truly was a proud American and was grateful for the opportunities along his journey.

He enjoyed playing polkas on his accordion and entertained at many family functions.

Although we are saddened by his passing, we take comfort in knowing, we will always have a proud and watchful eye from above.

He leaves beautiful memories to his wife whom he loved so dearly, Barbara of 58 years; his children Emil Jr. (Ann), Donna (Mark), David, Daniel (Judy) and Jonathan (Gina); his grandchildren Michael, Robert (Aaron), Amanda, Andrew, Krista, Craig, Eric (Andrea), Carly, Kelsey, Kyle, Ryan, Madeline, Lucas and Kayla; and many more dear relatives, neighbors and friends. His parents and siblings passed previously.
