I spent some of of my high school years hanging out with Pat, “Herb” as we called him back then. We went to different high schools but were connected through mutual friends. Great memories of loud cars driven a bit too fast, parties, bonfires, classic Rock, and camping trips at Harriman. Always lots of laughs as we tried to figure out the world and what to do next! We moved in different directions after high school but I’ll always remember Pat as a perfectionist who worked and played at wide open throttle, with courage, who really loved life and encouraged others to do the same. He was a good friend and I have no doubt he always took care of his family and was a great Dad. I hope all of you find peace with his passing. Carl P.

Dear Herbert Family,
Please accept my deepest condolences. This news is sad and shocking. Pat and I knew each other for over 20 years through my representation of the mall. He was a great guy and good friend and will be dearly missed.

Dear Herbert Family, I was so shocked to hear of Pat's passing. I worked with Pat for 18 years at the mall. He always had a smile and knew how to make you laugh. He loved his Irish heritage and I also remember him bringing in Irish soda bread. He loved his family and especially took pride in his grandchildren. He always took March 16, his birthday off saying it was a national holiday...lol
Pat worked hard and knew every square inch of the mall. No matter how difficult the task, Pat always found a way to fix whatever the problem was. I remember when the sprinker alarm sounded and all the horns and strobes went off, he ran out of the office like he was running a marathon while saying a few choice words....lol. He always made the mall look nice by planting nice flowers all over.
I sat near Pat's office and on quiet days he would have the music cranking in his office and sometimes heard him singing along. We always teased him that it was Pat's Party Playlist. I'm sure with his many years at the mall he had many more stories that we haven't heard. Someone else had posted that he was going to write a book about the mall. I'm sure it would be a best seller. Speaking of singing, during office birthday celebrations Pat lead us in singing Happy Birthday with fingers waving for us to sing faster. Sometimes we sang so slow it was pitiful....Ha!
You will be missed Pat. Thanks for keeping things fun and lively.

Hearing the news of Pat's passing has left me completely shocked and saddened. I have worked with Pat for 15+ years as the local sewer inspector (and probably a pain in his 'you-know-what', hahaha). As many do not know, the Mall (or what we call, RTSQ Mall) has an industrial sewer connection permit thru the local sewer authority (RVRSA), and it is my job to enforce this permit. It is not often that you meet folks in this field that you have enjoy working with regarding "enforcement". We had some challenging moments of managing grease from the many restaurants in the Mall, but Pat and his limited crew always handled it with a smile and humor and always got the job done to the best of their ability. I loved visiting his office (with no windows, haha) and admired all of his pictures of good times and his family. I always thought of him as Christopher Reave and how you reminded me of superman. I am really going to miss him, as I am sure many, many, many people will, especially his family and friends. The Mall will never be the same without him for sure. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family and friends. Godspeed.
Natalie Pisarcik, IPP Coordinator, RVRSA

Dear Herbert Family,
I am so very sad to hear of Pat’s passing. I worked with Pat for 14 years at Rockaway. He was always so kind and helpful. Crazy times of events, Santa Set set up etc. Some went well, and some were disastrous! But I could always count on Pat to help smooth things out. He never got flustered, or lost his cool.
The highlight of me knowing Pat was admiring the love he had for his family. He talked lovingly of Katelyn, Frank and Carolyn, he was sooo! Proud of all of you! I remember when Debbie would stop in for a visit usually with one or two of you, he was so happy. He was so proud of his Irish heritage, Loved when St. Patrick’s day came around, he brought us Irish soda bread. Loved his dad, he was so sweet and personable! He once brought me a bottle of wine to thank me for helping him some copies. Actually it was my pleasure to have him there waiting while I did it, he was so interesting. I will always remember Pat fondly, lovely man, lovely family!

It has been many, many years since i saw Patrick. One of the last times was in the family kitchen in Waldwick. A bunch of the usual hangouts were standing around talking and laughing like crazy. I am happy to hold that eternal memory of him. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. May the Good Lord hold Patrick gently in the hallow of his hand until you all meet again. With love and prayers, Debbie Allen Gazza

Hello,
I was saddened to hear about Pat today, I was away out of state last week and did not know he passed. I have been dealing with Pat at the Mall for the last 20+ years and over that time enjoyed my business dealings with him very much. We always got along well, and I truly enjoyed speaking with him. I think when he found out I was half Irish it made our relationship a happier one. I am going to truly miss him, the last time I spoke to him he was all excited about the new house and he wanted me to come by and make some recommendations for him on the lighting inside. Our Prayers here at Kahant Electric go out to your entire Family and we know he will be missed greatly.
Sincerely,
Frank J Picorale

I knew Pat, probably his entire tenure and progression at Rockaway Mall, as an electrical contractor for tenant work and occasional landlord work. I saw him at a golf outing a couple years ago, looked great, always very personable, always a gentleman, always laughter and smiles. Was so sorry to hear of his passing, prayers for him and his entire family.

My family owns Muldoon's in the lower level of Macy's. Pat has been a regular of ours for years. He loved his Budweiser. He always had great stories to tell. He would tell us that he was going to write a book called "The Malling of America". I was really looking forward to reading it. The things he has told me about working at the mall was always a pleasure. Over the course of Covid-19 he has spent a lot of time with me at both Muldoon's locations. He would reset our St. Patrick's day countdown clock to his birthday, the 16th and no one would notice until it's was only a few days before St. Patrick's Day. He told me how close he was to being born on St. Patrick's Day. I will truly miss you my friend. Rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of working with Pat for a decade and I always admired his dedication to his work, his family, his hobbies and interest, his heritage and his faith. People could count on Pat and that was important to him and it showed. Being part of a mall management team had many “scratch your head” moments and Pat approached them with good humor and level headedness that smoothed out many rough edges. I always enjoyed talking with Pat and listening to him glow about his children. I share their inevitable sadness on this occasion but know that in time, we will all smile from a story or a memory that includes Pat. Laurie and I send heartfelt condolences to all of Pat’s family, friends and co-workers. He shall be missed.
