My mom,
She went out like she did everything else, on her terms.
She liked to make people think she went camping all the time because that’s what Mac liked to do. She also liked to make you think she moved to Vermont because that’s what Mac wanted to do. But we all know she loved camping and loved Vermont. She loved the outdoors and she loved her birds. Those birds, if anyone needs a bird nick nack, shirt, towel, coffee mug, plate, candle,I can hook you up. One of her favorites things to do was take her grandkids to the raptor center where she volunteered and show them all the wild birds they were rehabbing. Nothing made her prouder then her grandkids.
She loved being independent and loved being able to drive herself anywhere she wanted to go.
Which is why one of my favorite memories of her is when she got the nickname Helen the Felon. Although she loved to drive everywhere, she apparently was not the biggest fan of the paperwork needed to drive. Over time, she had neglected to renew her registration and driver’s license, which led to her being pulled over late one Sunday night. As my brother in law Richard and I pulled up behind her, Richard politely asked me to stay in the car so I would not try to kill my mother. After the policeman profusely apologized for pulling over my elderly mother, who he had patiently sat with on the side of the road for over an hour, he asked why Richard came over to speak to him and not me- Richard replied he didn’t think the officer would want to be cleaning up a murder scene. The following day, I had to drive Helen to court, which just so happened to be next to Wild West City, which is where she got the Helen the Felon nickname.
I’m happy I was able to see her this past week and tell her I love her. I’m happy she was able to go peacefully. And I’m happy she did not have to spend her remaining days in place that would have reminded her everyday that she would no longer have her cherished independence.
I loved her then, I love her now and I will love her always. Rest peacefully with Dad, Aunt Chris, Aunt Tess, Uncle Frank, and Uncle Pete, they’ve missed you.

To Helen's Children and Grandchildren: I am so sorry to hear of Helen's passing. I was a neighbor of hers and we became friends only in the past few years when I started driving her to outings with the Red Hats and another club we were both a member of. Your Mom was always so chatty and we laughed many times that we were so busy chatting and not paying attention to where we were going that I had to turn the car around and back track - always arriving slightly late. She was so proud of her grandchildren and talked fondly about them often. I will miss my friend Helen. My deepest sympathy. Pearlann McManus

Chris, Karen & Ken, I am so sad to hear of the passing of your Mom. I have very fond memories of us all camping at Stokes and hanging at your home. I have never forgotten all the laughter our Mom's shared together, whether on the telephone for hours or when being together. May the Lord bring them back together for many more years of laughter. Condolences to you all and your families. God Bless.
Fondly,
Laura (Horchak) D'Agostino

Dear Chris, Karen, and Kenny,
I'm so sorry to learn of your Mom's passing. It doesn't seem that long ago that we had such a long telephone visit. Your Mom and I have been close friends for many years. We met each other at Beneficial Management Corp in Morristown, in the auditing dept, in the late 1950's. As we got to know each other, we learned that our fiancé's already knew each other and were hunting buddies. We've been friends for all these years. Once in a while we surprised each other by showing up at a Mt Arlington School program and realized that our granddaughters, Kaitlin Dunn and Samantha were classmates.
I will miss your Mom very much and please know all of you are in my prayers and I will be thinking of you especially on Monday.
Love,
MaryJane O'Connor
