Obituary of Marjorie S. Gormley

Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

“It is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced.”

                                    Tom Brokaw

Marjorie S. Gormley passed peacefully on July 28, 2020.

Marjorie was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1923 in Manhattan, NY.  She was one of six children to bless Alfred J. and Molly Eustace Schremp. She graduated from George Washington High School in Manhattan at 16 and received her bachelor’s degree in English from The College of Mount St. Vincent in 1944, where she would be proud to tell you she was president of the Glee Club.    Marjorie worked for the American Tobacco Co in Manhattan as a proofreader after graduation from the Mount.  Her academic achievements and employment as a young woman in the 1940’s was unique and she was certainly ahead of her time.   Throughout her life, she was intuitive, caring, well-read and she fostered those qualities in her children.

She met Vincent Gormley at a dance at The Hotel Astor in Manhattan, and as they say…. the rest was history.  They married on February 26, 1949 and soon after started a family of their own.  They discovered Green Pond in the early 1950’s and enjoyed weekends and summers with their extended family at the lake until they made the permanent move in 1969.

She was an amazing Mother and had a way of making each child feel wonderfully special.  She often said that she “raised six only children”.  She was the proud “Marshie” to six grandchildren and loved being with them. Although many of the G-Force live in different parts of the country, it was always a treat to spend time with Marshie particularly in Green Pond.

Marjorie loved to travel.   She went on many enjoyable trips throughout her life.  She especially enjoyed visiting her six grandchildren in Georgia, Idaho, and California.  Two of her favorite destinations included Maui and Vancouver.  Marjorie also loved riding along the West Coast and looking out at the "sparkling Pacific Ocean."

Predeceased by her husband Vincent (1991), her son Robert (2016) and her five siblings; she leaves beautiful memories to her children, Peter of Beverly Hills, CA, Christopher of Green Pond, NJ, Susan Gormley Niewenhous (Tom) of Lewiston, ID, Geoffrey (Brynn) of Santa Monica, CA and Thomas of Auburn, GA.  Her 6 grandchildren include Stephanie Gormley, Rory Niewenhous, Christina Gormley, Caitlyn Gormley, Phoebe Gormley and Vincent Gormley.

Marshie had a strong relationship with her faith and enjoyed sharing those beliefs with her St. Simon's family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 3, 2020 at St. Simon the Apostle Church at 10:00 a.m., 1010 Green Pond Rd, Newfoundland, NJ.  Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York.  If you plan to attend, we kindly ask that you wear a mask and practice social distancing.  If you would like to watch via live stream, you can do so by tuning in to St. Simon’s Facebook page that morning.  Donations in her memory may be made to the good work of the Green Pond First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 251 Newfoundland, NJ 07435 or to St. Simon the Apostle Church.
