Obituary of Shirley D. Herman

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Shirley D. Herman passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2020 at Boonton Care Center. She had shared 94 years of unconditional love, infectious laughter, and amazing memories with family and friends.

Born in Jersey City to the late Harry and Blanche Hofmann, she was the eldest of two girls to bless their household. Shirley and her sister were raised in both Jersey City and Union City. She graduated from Emerson High School and went on to create an amazing career for herself at Sears Fashion Distribution Center in North Bergen, retiring in 1989 as a Personnel Assistant. In 1947, she married her soulmate and forever friend, Joseph Herman. Together they had one beautiful daughter whom they raised in Secaucus. Shirley was a natural born caregiver; in her spare time, she loved to volunteer at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck. An avid Devils fan, her hobbies included attending Devils games, bowling, taking long boat rides, and most of all she enjoyed her trips to Mount Airy Casino where you could find her sitting at any slot machine with the biggest smile on. Above anything else, her family was her pride and joy. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for them and she relished every second spent with them. The Matriarch of our family will be sorely missed, forever treasured, and her memories will be passed on for generations. Although we are deeply saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her beloved husband, Joseph who passed in 2004, and her sister Corinne Eland who passed in 1985.

She leaves only joyful memories to her adored daughter, Donna Meyerick; her loving son-in-law, Milton “Mike” Meyerick; her cherished granddaughter, Kristen Denaro and her husband Tony; her treasured great-grandchildren, Cameron and Mason Denaro; her caring nephew, Ray Eland; her dear great-niece and great-nephew, Megan and Ryan Eland; and many more extended family and friends.

All services will be private. Memorial Donations are being accepted to the Dementia Society of America by way of www.inmemof.org. Please leave a condolence, light a candle, and share your favorite memory of Shirley here to continue to celebrate the wonderful life she bestowed upon us.
