Special memories of Elaine have filled my heart as I have also mourned her death. We have been "sisters" for more than 40 years as she was quick to tell me that we were more than "in laws." Elaine stayed with me when my first born, Karen, was born and helped learn how to care for a newborn! Those were very special days for us. She influenced my life in so many ways, but one specific way was in teaching me how to be a good home-maker. My home still reflects her attention to detail that I learned from her such as ideas about interior decorating and organizing my kitchen. My ironing board has a device to support the cord from my iron that she bought for me. My knife drawer is filled with special knives that she purchased, including one that is still in its card-board carrier and has in her hand writing, "slicer." I still mulch my flower beds the way she taught to do when we lived in Ionia and she and Fred came to visit us. Of course, we all have memories of her many cakes lovingly created for special events. I am so grateful for lovely memories, as we celebrate the life of this beautiful lady.

My first impression of Elaine was that she was "prim and proper." My three sons knew Jamie from Sunday School, but I had never had a relation- ship with Elaine. Then we went to the Tourne for a church picnic. We were eating watermelon and having a "who can spit a watermelon seed the furthest contest," when Elaine asked me what we were doing. I really thought she was going to admonish me, but instead she said "can I play?"
I'll miss Elaine dearly, most of all her hugs. God Bless.

Dear Fred and Jim,I'm so sorry for your loss of your dear wife and Mother. I am glad that Daddy was able to talk to her before she passed and that she was prepared. It seems that no matter how much you do to prepare it still comes as a shock to everyone. I know that she is up there now and just waiting to greet you both again. My thoughts and prayers go out to both of you.

We first met Elaine and Fred a few years ago at the Varker Family Reunion in NC. Elaine was such a sweet, quiet, gentle soul. We will miss her, but knowing that she is in the arms of her Lord, will make bearing the sorrow a little easier. We hope that God's grace and love will carry Fred and James through this time. Much love. Mike and Shirley

My memories go back to our childhood on the farm at Colmar all the way up to our"mini-family-cousin-reunion" a few years ago in PA. What a wonderful privilege it was to have had Elaine for my cousin. She was so dear to our hearts, even though we live far away now. She will be sorely missed by all of us. I speak for Millie, myself and the whole Denver branch of the "cousin" family. To Fred and James, I am so sorry for this tremendous loss of such a wonderful person. Dorie

I am honored that I had the privilege of calling Elaine a friend and an "adoptive mom". She was a person so important in my life as I felt I could always tell her everything and she never passed judgment on me. My thoughts and prayers go out to Fred and Jim. Hope they know I am only a phone call away.
