Catherine Adams Carey passed away quietly at Morris Hills Nursing Home in Morristown, NJ on Thursday January 18, 2007. Catherine was born to British Army Captain Arthur Adams and Irish Nurse Catherine Hogan Adams in Cork, Ireland on November 13, 1904. She arrived in the United States on board the steamship Baltic on July 3, 1922 at age 17. She originally lived with family friends in Scranton, Pa while studying nursing. When a back injury ended her studies, she moved to New Jersey to become the live-in companion to the wife of the superintendent of Greystone Hospital in Parsippany. There she met and married George Edward Carey. The couple settled on Myers Avenue in Denville where they became very active in St. Marys Church. After her husband died in 1956, Mrs. Carey remained in Denville and served for many years as the housekeeper for the priests at St. Marys. At the churchs seventy-fifth anniversary celebration, Mrs. Carey was honored by being selected to serve as the pastors surrogate mother for the traditional walk down the isle with the pastor. Catherine had also become known for the large number of friends without relatives in the area that she would invite to holiday dinners at her Myers Avenue residence. Her 29-year union to George yielded four children George and his wife Isabell Carey of Succasunna, retired vice-president of Lakeland Bus Company: the late Norman Carey, a vice president of at Prudential Life Insurance Company; Colonel Arthur (US Army Retired) and his wife Alice of Jonesboro, GA. And Ursula Marie Carey, who died in infancy. She also is survived by eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren. In 1976, she moved to Thompson Avenue in Dover, NJ, where she remained until 2003 when she moved to Morris Hills Residency in Morristown, NJ. Funeral services will be held on Monday January 22, at 8:30 AM from the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Avenue Denville, NJ www.normandean.com and at 9:45 AM a Liturgy of Christian Burial Service will be held at St. Marys R. C. Church on Myers Avenue in Denville, NJ. Following the Mass she will be buried with her husband at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Funeral Home.
