Mrs. Carey took care of me for many years when I was just a little girl, which enabled my mother to resume her teaching career.
I have so many wonderful memories of her. She took me on many walks, usually to Rockaway Park Lakes, down a little "toe path" to feed the ducks.
When one of her sons (I think it was George) was married, I was the flower girl. She rehearsed me for the walk down the aisle by having me practice walking in a straight line by following the stripes on our living room carpet and by carrying a bunched-up dust cloth so that I'd be comfortable carrying a bouquet. After the big day, she rewarded me with my heart's desire, which was a red bathing suit.
My mother told me they were a little bit worried (or maybe amused) at one point because I was learning to speak with a little bit of a brogue.
She remembered me with Christmas gifts until I was in my 30's. I lost touch with her about 3 years ago, which must have been when she entered the nursing home.
I live in California now, and will not able to be at the funeral, but please tell her family that my thoughts and prayers are with all of them and thank them for sharing their wonderful mother with me.
