My family spent many a happy day on the Marshall's farm. It was a little piece of paradise to us as I was growing up. We'd visit with Mr. and Mrs. Marshall and, if we were lucky, they'd mention that John was home across the way. We'd head over to his house and even as small children be unafraid and thrilled to see this "gentle giant". There was a good-natured sincerity about him, plus he always had cool mechanical and antique stuff and stories to tell. John and the Marshalls were certainly an "old school" family and this world is sorely lacking them nowadays. John, Rest in peace.

John was a friend of mine since Kindergarten at VRS, Boonton Twp. As life grew on and we bumped into each other he was still and always a friend. One helluva great guy! I share my sorrows with his family. Love, Danny Tirpak

We were shocked and upset learning of John's demise. We have lived in the township for almost fifty years and have known Charlie, Mary and John for most of that time. We purchased Christmas trees in the early years. Both Charlie and John did the excavation for the addition to our home in 1981. John repaired many a landscaping piece of equipment for us.
I have always held John and Charlie on a high level of esteem and looked up to them. Their standards were the highest. Mary we can't believe this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Charlie.

Laurie and I were very saddened to hear of Johns passing. John and I grew up together as friends since kindergarten. When my family moved from West Road to Oak Road we were probably in 4th grade, John became my neighbor and childhood best friend. We built numerous forts and tree houses and blazed a network of trails through the woods connecting our families properties to neighbors and other friends properties. As kids, during the summer, we spent most nights camping out. Growing up we drove Johns woods buggy over our network of trails. John was always always thinking of ways to change and improve his machine, and fabricating and building something new. Johns patience was tried over and over when he taught me to weld; a skill I use regularly today. He was always the one to come up with a practical solution. Some of my best memories growing up were hanging out at Marshalls Hillside Farm and helping John with chores. This is where, as a kid I learned to work hard if I wanted to get something done. John always told me to "work hard and save my money." When we were about 12 or 13 John taught me to drive "shakey" the 1931 chevy truck and also the 1936 chevy dump truck when we were hauling hay in the fields. John taught me how to split firewood with an axe back in the days before we used wood splitters. I remember hanging out across the road helping to wait on ice customers on hot summer days, looking at all the old stuff up in the dance hall, waiting for the school bus in the sawmill, and eating fresh picked sweet corn and tomatoes from Marshalls garden. John helped me replace the head gaskets on my first car and get it running. John showed me how to repair the rusted floors in my international scout and was always able to fix or build any project I challenged him with. More recently, after moving to Pennsylvania Laurie and I always enjoyed stopping to visit John and his family when we traveled to New Jersey and taking time to reminisce and recall times during our childhood. Yes those memories were the BEST! I will cherish them the rest of my life and I will never forget my lifelong friend. Pete Schmidt

Words cannot express how shocked and saddened we were to learn of John's passing. We moved to Boonton Township over 43 years ago and one of our first acquaintances were Mary and Charlie Marshall and their three young sons. Over these many years Charlie, and later John, were of invaluable help to us on our piece of property. From cutting down trees, helping us dig out of insurmountable snow drifts in our driveway with a backhoe during some furious snowstorms, to repairing our various tractors, farm equipment and tools. John was a genius at repairing equipment. We had a large 63-year old Massey Harris tractor (which we just recently sold) that can thank its still wonderful working condition to John Marshall.
John was always there when we needed him (which was often). We will always think of him with deepest respect and fondness and will miss seeing him and having some of our long conversations :) John was a mild-mannered gentle giant with an easy going spirit who had a special affinity with animals. A most admirable man.
Our deepest sympathy to you Mary, Charlie, Tom and Donna. We know that you are broken-hearted. We hope the knowledge that John is in God's loving embrace and that you will indeed see him again one day will give you peace.
With love, Irene & Harry

He was always there to lend a hand or share his knowledge. He was a go to guy when you had a problem with mechanics. The things he would fabricate were amazing ! He Had helped my family out numerous times. Especially my father with his international tractors. And rebuilding his 1956 Willys jeep better than it looked when it was built! John will always be in our thoughts ....
