Friends are mourning the loss of Sylvia Smith Campbell. Sylvia died on April 10 at the age of 81. Born in Union City to Harry Bennett Smith and Dorothy Whyte Smith, Sylvia graduated from Chatham High School before receiving degrees at Mount Holyoke College and Montclair State.
She taught in the Parsippany school system from 1953 to 1992, working at Central and Brooklawn Middle Schools.
Sylvia excelled in the classroom, being honored as Parsippany’s Teacher of the year, recognized with the New Jersey Governor’s Award and named in Who’s Who in America’s Teachers. She belonged to several educational associations including Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority. The organization gave her a Distinguished Member Service award.
Outside of school, Ms. Campbell traveled the world, working with Earthwatch along with other national and international conservation organizations. She also spent time working in politics as a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters.
Visitation and a memorial service for Sylvia Smith Campbell will be held on Saturday, April 14th from 2-4pm at the Norman Dean Home for Services 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ www.normandean.com, (please light a candle in memory of Sylvia on website). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
