Mrs. C,
I am so grateful to you for how much you taught me and will continue to look back on our Forensics days fondly. You were always in such good spirits and had so much energy--even so early in the morning. It was such a pleasure to spend time with you and to learn from you. You are truly inspirational. I will keep you in my thoughts and memories always.
May your memory be a blessing to all who knew you. You will be missed.
Thank you so much,
Sharon Hakakian Bergman

Sylvia was my husband Joe's oldest friend - 58 years - from the time he started teaching at Central. Like so many others we considered Sister Sylvia a beloved member of our family; to our daughters she was Aunt Sylvia. Many holiday dinners were shared together when we lived in Morris County and many delightful visits from her once we moved to the shore... Special memories - her collection of little animals, whom she called The Supervisors, two of whom would accompany her on her visits... Harvey, Babe and Esmeralda, the names she gave to her cars...Sylvia stretching out on the living room floor after a particularly filling dinner...the piano she "lent" us so the girls could take lessons and Joe could practice for his musicals... parking her Prius next to another Prius so they could talk together... her love of the Mets... Sylvia sitting on our couch in her blue robe doing the NY Times crossword puzzle... The people and creatures of this world have lost a great friend. She will be missed...

A friend to all both two and four footed creatures, she will be dearly missed on Earth. One can imagine that she is with her many loving creatures and that birds are chittering and cats purring in great harmony with Sylvia.

Sylvia helped teach me a love of exploring and understanding other cultures, even Russia at a time during the Cold War when empathetic perspectives were in very short supply. She became a model of a committed, interested, informed educator, who I've spent a career trying to emulate. My students continue to benefit from the lessons she taught me beginning 35 years ago.

Smitty was one of my bridesmaids and a dear, dear friend over the years. She visited when in California and we did the same when in New Jersey. We most enjoyed her sparkling wit and fun-loving nature as well as reports of her escapades around the world. She was a true delight. I shall miss her and our back and forth "tomes" to keep current on our lives.

My cats (and any other wanderers nearby) will miss your conversations. It was always nice to here your traveling stories about Earthwatch adventures. Will miss the cookies and homemade applesauce. Its been a pleasure knowing you these last 20 something years. Thanks for the memories. Your neighbor and friend,Paul.

Sylvia's unquenchable spirit, wit, and wisdom will be sorely missed. As Secretary of the Board of the Mount Holyoke Club of Northern NJ for many years, she added a lightness to our meetings and, always, absolutely correct grammar to our minutes. She was a wonderful friend and unique individual.

Soupy was my 8th grade teacher many, many years ago. We formed a lasting friendship and along the way I learned numerous "life lessons." They include: 1-Use good grammar!! Throughout my scientific career I have been known as "grammar queen;" 2-Always love a kitty; 3-Seek travel adventures; 4-Enjoy a glass of Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry. Alla vita.

I first met Sylvia, Aunt Snoopy (a name fitting her for her love of the Peanuts cartoon),at Brooklawn M.S. She became a member of our family. She had many wonderful conversations with Joe, Kyle and me about education, travels and critters. Aunt Snoopy was unique in all the world. She gave her cars names, like Harvey & Esmerelda. She dedicated her life to education, children & nature. She was a dear friend and a cherished adopted family member. Sylvia enriched our lives and she made the world a better place. To quote William Shakespeare, "One touch of nature makes the whole world kin." We will miss you Aunt Snoopy, Maureen, Joe & Kyle

I was saddened to learn of Sylvia's passing. She was a dedicated teacher, a good friend and an adventurous world traveler. She inspired others in so many ways and encouraged me to go on an Earth Watch Expedition on my first solo trip which was a great experience.
Sylvia will be sorely missed by all who knew her and will live on in our memories of her.

My Memories of Sylvia are warm and fuzzy. She was a great friend who gave me confidence and encouragement as my turn came to be President of our honorary sorority. She was a wonderful woman who made life great fun. She went out of her way to come and visit me when I had lost my husband after we retired in Florida. May she rest in peace with the angels.

Although not mentioned in her obituary, Sylvia Campbell was a dedicated and outstanding volunteer and member of the Denville Rotary Club. She was a sharing and giving person, always willing to lend a hand to Rotary Projects. She especially loved to be part of our Dictionary Project, giving a dictionary to every Third Grader in Denville. Her love of travel gave her numerous opportunities to share this gift with fellow Rotary members and clubs by her slide presentations. Sylvia's smile was illuminating and her spirit undauntable. She will be missed greatly by all.
Donna I. Costello, Past President, Denville Rotary Club

Knowing you since my days at Brooklawn, I always addressed you as Ms. Campbell, until we reunited many years later through AAUW, and you begged me to call you Sylvia! It was my pleasure to know such an outstanding educator and person with such a zest for life. No one could organize a book sale like Sylvia!

I subbed for you in your social studies class MANY years ago. You would put the days lesson on a audio tape so when I entered the room, I would just press PLAY. you would even say things in the tape like, "Joey, remove your gum!"
You were a world traveler and brought your experiences to the classroom for all to learn. You will be missed.

I will always remember your visit to my Florida home. You so graciously gave a presentation to our local AAUW chapter. Afterwards we took a swim in my pool with our less than glamorous bathing suits on. We had our plastic wine goblets with us and our personal bartender, my husband Mark, made sure our refreshments were always replenished. As the evening wore on, our swimsuits became more and more fashionable.
Godspeed Slyvia. You will be missed. Love Deanne and Mark.

Dear Sylvia:
You were my mentor who taught me how to write properly and expressively. You were the inspiration for my becoming an educator after four years in research & development, and I am forever in your debt - you even came to my retirement party in 2007. I will miss our semi-annual luncheons we enjoyed before I would leave for Arizona and upon my return. Please save me a seat at the table in the Restaurant in the Sky. With love and gratitude, Bob Quinn.
