Ole Hans Baadshaug posted a condolence

In my first visual impression of Ole Magnus, from his and Ingebjørg’s visit to the family’s farm Baadshaug during the late winter and spring of 1948, he filled a Santa Claus-like role with the huge bag of presents to overwhelm me and the rest of the family with. As the allodial privileged to Baadshaug, I must have been specially favored, e.g. when considering the rich collection of joiner’s tools, cowboy equipment, and toys which I received, in addition to all the cloths. On a diary farm like Baadshaug, the most urgent work at season of their arrival, is carting the barnyard dung from the dung cellar to the fields, an activity in which Ole Magnus took very effectively part almost from day one of his visit. With his (American?) sense for effectiveness he even found a proper function for the farmer to be (8 years of age at the time, and not very skilled in horse managing) in the transport chain. During his three months stay he demonstrated again and again his skills in all types of hands work, including handling of all kinds of farmers tasks to more sophisticated carpenter’s or joiner’s work. The model glider he made me, functioned excellently, but its brittle construction did not at length stand the comprehensive and rough test program carried out. For this and many other reasons, Ole Magnus meant something very special to me, I think far beyond the general (Norwegian) feeling about “my cousin in America”. In 1994, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit his and Ingebjørg’s home in Rockaway to enjoy their hospitality, care, and generosity. The days we spent there will always have a special room in my mind, as will their memorable visit and stay at Baadshaug in 1948.

Dear Mrs. Baadshaug, Jim & Ken, my sympathies and condolances on the passing of your husband and father. He was like a second dad to me growing up. He took me under his wing playing sports and hunting with Kenny. I remember fondly the days of playing hockey with him down on Parks lake. He was a wonderful man to be around and a genuinely caring person. May the Lord give your family peace during this difficult time. Love - Jim Kaiser and family

My “Onkel Ole i Amerika” though in distance far away, was in many ways close to us with his interest and care for the family. I have a lot of good memories about him. And never could I feel more welcome than when coming to Caruso Road.
I remember Ole as the most positive person, full of guts, fair (did not even let me win once when playing chess with him) and in later years as a well of information about family history. I really will miss him, and so will Frøydis and the boys.

Uncle Ole Magnus used to call every few months.
He was always happy, cheerful and content, even when he called five years ago, some time after he had received heart surgery. I thought he would still be in bed, recovering, but he had been out mowing the lawn, and could not wait to get better and be able to do more work. He was definitely not one to lie down or feel sorry for himself.
Ole Magnus was my father's only brother, and he was very interested in news of the family. He also kept us informed about his side, and was extremely proud of Jim, Kenny, and the grandchildren.
I will always have fond memories of the phone conversations, of his calm, friendly voice, and of the times we met, here in Norway and in Rockaway.
My thoughts are with you, tante Ingebjørg, Jim and Kenny.

Onkel Magnus is so special in my memory. He has been like a grandfather to me...He has always been so fun- this is the word that stands out when thinking of him. He would always play ping pong, pool, chess, checkers, and Pong with me and Erik when we were little. I know now (and may have known then as well) that he would win sometimes and then almost equally let us win so that we always felt like we were in the game:)
Onkel Magnus has always been so kind- other memories include Walton- he would play in the lake with us in the canoe, drive us up the mountain in the back of the tractor, campfires, and just great times in general. I always looked forward to weekends and visits with Tante Inge and Onkel Magnus- they are close and dear to my heart. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and for all your love. Hege

My earliest memory of that big, generous cousin of mine dates back to 1939 when I was 3 years old and Ole Magnus went to sea Then came the war and for five years we did not know whether he was alive or dead. I remember his mother crying when the war ended and she got the message that he was safe and sound. It was the first time I saw someone cry from happiness. In 1948 the war hero came home with his glamorous Ingebjørg and stayed for three month at Baadshaug – a period of much laughter and fun for all who met them. Many years later, when I came to work in the US, I visited Rockaway regularly and got to learn Jim and Ken, and spent many Christmases with them and the rest of the family. During the last few years Einar, my husband, and I enjoyed the long telephone conversations we had with him regularly. The last time we met was this fall, and it felt so good to be with him and Ingebjørg again. You have been an important part of my life, although we did not see each other so often.

I've only met Ole once or twice. But I have a fond memory of him playing checkers. He always made me laugh anytime any where. I would go and visit him with Jenna and I wouldnt want to leave because he always made it a pleasure. I believe that he was a great person, based on what Jenna always had to say about him. I will think/miss him when I play checkers or visit Jenna's grandparents house.
My prayers are with you,

OCEANS APART
Your body is now the ocean upon the tidal sand
you are the breeze within my hair and hand
how i miss you upon that shore
and the smile that you once wore
There is no more you and I
so I guess this must be goodbye
for you are now the ocean within my heart
and we must be forever apart
One day i hope we will meet again upon that shore
where we will walk hand in hand and I will cry no more
but until that day I wish you farewell my love
I know you are looking down on me from above
But until that day we will be oceans apart

As the present owner of the family farm I should like to pay tribute to the memory of Ole Magnus. He was the cousin of my mother Inger. I remember with pleasure his visit to here some years ago.
I also appreciated greatly his phone calls that he made a couple of times every year.
He showed great interest in the farm and had an impressive memory of times past. Although I only met him once as an adult, I shall always remember his happy voice and good humoured remarks on the phone from "over there". I should like to express my greatest sympathy for the family's loss.

Ken, Jim and Families - My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. I'd like to share one of my favorite poems:
Crossing the Bar
Alfred Lord Tenneyson
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
