Denville - Ouida M.Filman died Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Florida. On Saturday, she enjoyed a wonderful day with her fianc Richard Sullivan and family while visiting at her daughters home in Sarasota, Florida. Unexpectedly, she died peacefully after going to sleep that evening.
Ouida was born on January 10, 1928 to Noble and Ethel Sutton in Sherman, Texas. A twin and one of six children, she married in 1945 and moved to Cranford, New Jersey in 1946. She and her past husband moved to Denville in 1950 but later settled in the community of Lake Arrowhead, where she resided for 46 years. Active in community affairs, Ouida served 51 years in the American Legion Auxiliary and held past president positions for Morris County post and Denville unit 390. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW for 52 years. It was not uncommon to see her contributing time at township elections, St. Clares Hospital, American Legion and Lake Arrowhead community events. She worked for Allied Chemical (Honeywell) in Morristown, NJ for over 30 years in the cost accounting department and retired in 1987. Ouida was a pillar of will, strength, and support to friends and family. She was a pioneer who survived major open-heart surgery in the early fifties and again in the nineties. In her later years she became a snowbird, traveling to warmer climates in the winter months and returning to her Denville residence in the spring coupled with summers at the club in South Dartmouth, MA. She and her devoted companion Richard Sullivan; traveled, golfed, enjoyed family, friends and lived life to the fullest.
Ouida is survived by her loving family: son and daughter-in-law, Bernd and Elaine Stoecker of Byram Township, NJ; daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Wayne Lamphier of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Jennifer and Jason Lamphier. In Missouri: her brother, Howard Sutton. In Texas: her sisters Vereda Hulsey and Flo Goodall; close friend and sister-in-law Theresa Sutton; cousins Billy Don Day and Ramona Engram. .
She was pre-deceased by brothers Delbert and Jack Sutton; and her beloved grandson, Wayne Lamphier, Jr.
A Memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday April 22, 2006 at Norman Dean Funeral Home, 16 Righter Avenue, Denville, NJ, www.normandean.com. Visitation will be from 1:00pm to 3:00pm for friends and family with an honor service by the American Legion Auxiliary at 2:45pm and a closing Memorial Service at 3:00pm.
