“Our Mother”
God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December
James M. Barrie
Today it is so hard but after all it is our mother- although consoling knowing all her family and friends greeted her upon her arrival into heaven. I can assure you I know who the first three were after our Lord.
We owe her a tribute – Ma, as known to all and called by friends of ours, friends of her grandchildren and Grandma by Vincent and Joey. She was unique and special in many ways.
- She loved to laugh when told any trivial story and would laugh. I remember one day having coffee at Barnes and Nobel while telling her a story she got so hysterical, we laughed and laughed. She laughed so hard we woke up the readers that were intensely emerged in their books. Embarrassed? No not Ma! Just having a good time while having just a cup of coffee.
- She was a news addict. Anything you needed to know at anytime of the day or night pertaining to politics and every new developing story – just call Ma for an update. As sick as she was and unable to speak, she was writing something in the air with her finger. We finally figured out it was the number 30, the Fox News channel in the hospital. She wanted to watch the news and still be abreast of her daily updates.
- She loved her grandchildren to the moon and back. Her grandchildren loved her the same. Showing respect at all times. Calling her all the time, going for cooking lessons, bringing their friends for lunch/diners, wearing her hand sewn costumes and winning first place almost every Halloween, playing Uno and laughing uncontrollably. Billy and Ashley calling her all the time form college. Vincent and Joey visiting her all these weeks although it was so hard on them to see. Billy, Ashley, Joey and Vincent were always proud of their Grandmother and always will be.
- She laughed over the past weeks even in the hospital as sick as she was as we reminded her about funny stories never loosing her sense of humor.
- The nursing staff admired Ma for her stamina, always commending her for not
one complaint. We asked her why she didn’t complain and her reply was “For what reason should I complain?”
My last birthday card from Ma in November said:
There are big days
And small days,
Up days
And down days
And some days
So full of stuff
We can barely tell
What’s going on
But big, small,
Up, down, or in between
We just keep doing
Our best,
Trying to be happy.
Today is one of those down days, but despite that, I know more than anything you want us to be happy. Rest assured we will be when we think about all the wonderful things you did unselfishly giving from your heart. Always doing for us before yourself – we always noticed!
We shall be happy for you knowing you have an everlasting, blissful existence with those that missed you for a very long time and by being reassured that we too will see you again.

Still today...... I think of the many visits as a boy to see my Aunt Rose. The family shared so many happy times filled with laughter and much love. My aunt's smile and warmth was contagious......

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.
We lived with Rose in the Adams Building in Fox Hills until 2010 and did enjoy her Italian desserts.
