This is a poem I wrote for my dad and read at his surprise 65th birthday party at World Yacht in Manhattan 25 years ago
(read to the cadence of a Dr. Suess poem:
"THE GREAT ONE"
There is a young man
who turned sixty five;
This is his story,
It ain't no jive.
Ron's life began
with Pearl and Joe
He jammed with Izzy,
Abie and Manny
Til' Selma said 'yo".
In Korea, he was
folklore:
the only medic ever
to squirm at gore.
He married his love,
sold some gum
Played poker, baseball;
had some fun.
Along came Robin,
the joyous first child;
Then came Wendy,
sweet yet wild.
With little Joe, his dream
came true.
A boy, he said, was his due.
He raised his children
with a firm hand.
Taught us to mow, to garden
and to love the land.
We traveled, we swam;
on the beach we played.
In motels and hotels and
cabins we stayed.
We grew up listnin' to
Al Jolson and Frankie Lane.
Henny Youngman jokes and
musicians I still can't name.
Now, was it Gleason or Dad
to first say "I'm the greatest"?
Have you heard this joke, or that,
my very latest?
He loves to tell stories and jokes
only HE thinks is funny.
He loves to play tennis, eat nuts
and make lots of money.
For food to taste good,
it's got to burn.
and other strange tidbits
from him I did learn.
Drive as fast as you can
yet avoid arrest.
Cut to the front of the line:
Now you've passed his test.
Who else would sleep on a chaise
in a hurricane shelter,
See 3 movies for one while the
crowds change helter skelter?
But life is not all play;
He loves his work.
To rest would drive
this man berserk.
He is a salesman
none surpasss.
He peddles his wares
with unique panache.
He can sell anything- -
from cookies to nuts
He loves to take risks--
He's got guts!
He began his career
under Bill McKee
Who taught him the ropes
with integrity.
There was the egg man
koo koo ka choo.
corn syrups, meats, and
fine foods, too.
He believes life's essence
is to toil and strive,
to seek adventure and
celebrate being alive.
My dad has known victory
and moments of defeat
To dare greatly is to win;
to criticize and fear
is to be beat.
While he was doing
all this wonderful stuff
he took us to ball games
and ate lots of nuts.
He fed us hot dogs
and lots of pops--
mallow mars, candy bars
-- my dad was tops.
Showed us the world
from Harlem to Maine;
Stood behind us in pleasure
as well as in pain.
I especially treasured
those moments alone,
the walks in the park,
the talks on the phone.
My dad taught me to toil
and strive,
to love adventure
and being alive.
Whenever I look,
he's always there.
Amongst us 3 kids
he's always generous
and fair.
He spoils his 7 grandkids
with love and affection,
fast food, Central Park,
movies, toys and sweet confections.
If the apple doesn't fall
far from the tree,
There's lots to look forward to
for Wendy, Joe and me.
I love you dad.
and I always will.
I miss you.
With all my Love,
Robin

Our sincerest condolences to the Aihini family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
What a delight it was in getting to know Aaron Aihini. For over 30 years we were fortunate to share in his life. His presence never failed to light up the room. Claire and I always looked forward to seeing him (and his lovely wife Selma). With his contagious smile and charming words Aaron was the shining star and center of attention in any room. He was in a class all his own. We will miss that smile and flamboyant style but will have the memories to share forever and that will never fade.
May you Rest In Peace.
All our love,
Coach and Claire

I was extremely lucky to have had Ron as my mentor, my teacher and my benefactor. If not for him, I might have ended up just another young punk from Guttenberg. Without a strong father figure in my life, Ron taught me BY EXAMPLE. By observing his methods, I tried to figure out how to navigate my life into a direction that would make HIM proud. The business lessons (and LIFE lessons) that he taught me were invaluable, and for that I will forever be grateful to Aaron Aihini.
Sam Mitchell
We grieve with the Aihini family for the loss of this great man, loving father, grandfather and dear friend. Our hearts are broken with yours and we weep for all who love him. Ron was a remarkable person, a giant among men. May his memory forever be a blessing.
