Gayle, Even though you have been missing from us for awhile, you are always in my heart. What you did for the children who were lucky enough to go to sarah ward is indescribable. I have been thinking so much of you recently and trying to channel the strength you always gave me when i needed it the most. There are not enough words to describe what you meant to me. You were always there for me and it is from you that I have the passion for children that I have today
I hope you are resting wellLove always janice

I was so sad to hear of Gayle's passing. What a truly wonderful and caring person. Always thinking of others before herself. I have known Gayle since she first started working at Sarah Ward. I take the children's portraits each year for the schools. The best well behaved and cutest children I have ever seen! A Tribute to Gayle! It was a great pleasure to work for her all these years. I was extremely saddened to hear of her passing. My condolences to her family. She will be missed by all. Justin "Jay" Baiter

Ms. Gayle was one of the most thoughtful, considerate and caring persons that we have ever known. Over the past eight years, she has made our family feel welcome at my children's "second home" Sarah Ward Nursery. Sarah Ward will not be the same but I am confident that Ms. Gayle's vision for and commitment to the children of Sarah Ward will be carried out by the caring professionals that she leaves behind. On behalf of my children, Jada and Christopher, RIP Ms. Gayle.

I first met Gayle at Seton Hall University. We were both enrolled in a non-profit organization certificate program. A bright, intelligent and forward thinking person, she gained my respect as a professional in the field of early care and education, but more importantly--as a human being and a defender of human rights. She will be missted.

I knew Gayle for what seems like my entire life. I remember painting her house on the Lake when I was a boy. I spent a good portion of my days as a carpenter in the Sarah Ward Nurseries, fixing endless ceiling tiles, painting walls, and repairing whatever Gayle needed us to. Every time I saw her, she made a point to put her phone conversation on hold for a moment, just to say hello, ask me if I needed anything, and make sure all was fine in my life. Gayle was always so giving, of her time, of her advice, and of her pocket. If she wanted to give me a few dollars to get lunch, there was no way I could refuse. She had a stubbornness about her which I doubt I will ever see again in someone. The last of a dying breed. I remember how good she was with all the kids. Stern, but loving, and genuine. A true inspiration to me as a person. She was a great friend to me and my family, and I will miss her dearly. rest in peace, Gayle.

I first met Ms Gayle when she provided me with my first teaching position as I started my teaching career. I only hope she understood the true capacity of her actions and how it positively shaped the hearts and minds of the children that attended Sarah Ward. I tribute the fact that I am a strong, independent woman and lifelong learner to Ms Gayle, who continued to keep pushing us to accomplish things in our teaching careers that we never thought possible. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I would like to express my shock and sadness upon hearing of Gayle's death. To her family I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy. I know loosing a loved one at anytime is sad, but loosing someone around the holidays always seems a bit harder. Just keep thinking happy thoughts. I started working for Gayle 24 years ago, I recall one day I was on Sanford Ave. painting, and I could hear some commotion in one of the classrooms, very quickly followed by Gayle, bellowing from her office "Do any children need to see me?" There was immediate silence through out the buildings. I remember thinking to myself "this is one tough woman", and looking back I found I was right, she was one of the toughest. But I also got to know Gail over the years, and realised that she was also one of the kindest, fairest, and most dedicated women I have ever known. The dedication she had for her kids, her staff, and her beloved Sarah Ward Nurseries, was unwavering, and her commitment, endless. I also found Gayle to be a caring person, we would often sit in her office and talk about families, politics, life in general, and the future, and despite her medical problems, she always remained optimistic. I admired her for that and I am going to miss those talks. I am going to miss Gayle very much, since meeting her our relationship had evolved from one of a Director-painter, to us being very good friends, and I am extremely grateful for that.
Sincerely,
John Prior

I am so sad to hear about Gayle's passing. I met Gayle over 15 years ago, and she gave me my first teaching job at Sarah Ward. She allowed me to come back every summer to work for her once I had received a teaching job in a public school. She and I would always talk about her family and my family. She would talk about her niece and nephew with such joy. Gayle was my mentor not only in teaching, but in life. I will never forget the kind of person she was. I am so sad to hear of her passing.

I first met Gayle in 1995, I came to her looking for a job with minimal work experience and a high school diploma. Fortunately for me Gayle not only gave me a job but she changed my life forever. You see Gayle gave me the gift of education. Starting with my CDA and ultimately getting my degree in teaching, and becoming teacher of the year. Throughout my journey Gayle was always there with me supporting me , encouraging me. She was a teacher, a mentor, a stern mother at times .. but Gayle most of all you were respected and very much loved -I will never forget you love Diana

The first meeting I had with Gayle was 13 years ago. She asked if I could wait for awhile after school, so she could walk a child to her grandma's house. You see, it was cold and icy outside and Gayle wanted to spare the elderly woman from having to walk up the hill in the snowy weather. That was Gayle, always going the extra mile for her children. And they were all her children.
Gayle was the standard bearer for excellence at Sarah Ward. She demanded only the best for all the children in her care. Although Newark has lost a most amazing and dedicated child advocate, her wisdom and spirit will live on in all those who were blessed to know her.

It is very difficult to put how I am feeling into words. I only worked for Gayle a short time in comparison to many of my co-workers. However, I owe her much of who I am as a teacher. She inspired me and many others to become the best we can be. I was very unhappy where I was working before Sarah Ward, and I bothered Gayle for almost two years before she finally hired me. Working for her taught me so much. I can only hope I made her proud in the short time I worked for her. She will be sincerely missed, and I promise to continue to try to make her proud.
