Obituary of Eugenia M. “Jean” Smalley

Jean M. Smalley, nee Muirheid 70, died at her home in Rockaway Township, NJ, following a long illness. She was born in Trenton, NJ, and moved to Morristown, NJ in 1953, and later moving to Rockaway Township, in 1960. In 1953 she graduated from Mercer Hospital School of Nursing. Following graduation she went to work as a registered nurse at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ. In 1970 she left to work as a private duty nurse until 1973, when she started as a school nurse at the Stoneybrook Elementary School in Rockaway Township. After a short time she became the School Districts Head Nurse, which she held until retiring in 1993. She had been a member of the Morris County School Nurses Association, where she had held the position as Chairman of several committees a) Hospitality, b) Sunshine, and c) Librarian. She had served on the Executive Board, and upon her retirement she was awarded an honorary lifetime membership. After retiring she played golf, and was a member of Peace Pipe Country Club in Denville,NJ. She had also been a volunteer for the Center of Hospice Care. She has been a member of the Church of the Saviour Episcopal Church in Denville, where she was a member of their St. Marthas Guild. She is survived by her husband Peter B. with whom she was married to for 46 years. Her two sons Cliff and his wife Karen of Bloomingdale, New York, and Ken and his wife Susan of Kinnelon, NJ. Four grandchildren Clayton Peter, Amber Elizabeth, Vanessa Lina, and Colin John Smalley. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday October 1, 2002 at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Saviour 155 Morris Avenue Denville, NJ. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Norman Dean Home for Services. Burial will take place at Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover, NJ. Donations are being accepted to The Center for Hospice Care 187 Millburn Avenue Millburn, New Jersey 07041-1845.
