As a child Joan lived in Pompton Lakes, Caldwell, Montclair, and North Caldwell, New Jersey before moving to Niles, Michigan where she graduated from High School. Joan attended WMU in Kalamazoo, Michigan before moving to Albuquerque where she earned her B.S. in Nutritional Education in 1985 from the University of New Mexico. She lived in New Mexico, Virginia, Maryland, and the Florida Keys before moving to New Jersey where she worked as a nutritionist in the Women's Infants & Children Program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, NJ. She referred to this as her "dream job". She really loved counseling mothers and children about diet and by all co-workers' accounts was extremely adept at doing so.
