I was so impressed by the way he handled his illness. He never seemed to give in to any type of self pity despite the fact that he had this very difficult diagnosis. He was a wonderful patient.

Otto holds a prominent place among the memories of my youth. Always accommodating, his dry humor is what I remember fondly. Of particular note was the time in high school when Carl and I were working out in the Erdmann's basement. Otto came in, looked at us, and said "Maybe I should lift weights, too, so I have the strength to mow the lawn when Carl doesn't help me."
