Our chapter will definately miss Hank's red suspenders when we have gatherings at the Luer house. He was always ready to be our evening photographer as well as to offer us his words of wisdom.
Lovingly,

Charlotte hosting one of several lovely RH get-togethers, with her co-host
Hank, serving wine to our Red Hat Sisters. Hank of course, attired in his 'red hat' ski cap. I think he enjoyed our get togethers as much as we did. He'll be missed.........

Hank was a younger soldier at the Army Chemical Center when I was there during the Korean War. We worked on PFPSR (Automatic Pilot Filling Plant for Shells and Rockets).
We never talked about it later because it was for Nerve Gas.
My favorite memory from then is when Hank hooked up a small 10' by 20' building to a tank and pulled it off into the woods one Sunday afternoon, then crushed it. Never found. (He had help.) A HUGE IG investigation followed, but no one ever ratted until now!
My favorite Bell Labs memory is Hank's big garden back of the old Barn at Whippany. We worked in the same building and both had gardens, but I quit when the deer and rabbits ate it all. Not Hank. He built a 10' high fence with telephone poles around his and neighboring vacated gardens, useing endless supplies of woven wire to keep the rabbits out, burying the wire to keep the racoons and badgers out of the lush garden. Perhapsit was a rennaisance or Zen thing, but he took pride in harvesting something to eat from the garden every month of the year.
It was a miracle some of the MGs made it home and back. I claimed he had to drive with his feet with a screwdriver and wrench in both hands. Once it had seemed to be true. Hank was so human his presence will always be here.

Although not known to me til after his death, I am not surprised he was also a UU. Being Army veterans, we were a couple of the older Brothers in Phi Beta Tau at NCE. Hank's dry humor, quick mind and quiet patience (sometimes)are noted fondly. Neal Andreae, UU Fellowship of Hendersonville, NC

Dear Charlotte & Family: I was sad to hear of Mr. Luer's passing but at least he is at peace now. I know he had been sick for quite awhile going back to my Key Food days and now the A&P days as you would stop in the morning for some groceries! SOrry for you loss.
