Doris, I was so sorry to hear about Dick. He was the backbone of the zone’s service department. He was a genius at analyzing and solving problems. He would suck on that pipe, think a little while and then come up with the answer. If GM had just a few more like him, they never would have had the problems they had.
The very best to you and the family.

I count it a privilege to have known Dick. He was a good man and a Christian man and I'm comforted to know the moment Dick left this world he entered the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is in heaven and is oblivious to the trials and tribulations he faced on earth. He also loved his wife and children and grandchildren dearly. I can't think of a man that was more devoted to his family than Dick was to his family.

I had the pleasure to work with Dick at the GM Training Center in Moorestown, NJ. He always made sure his clazss was the best he could do. At the end of the day, I always knew that he had done a good job as I would see him in the hall with his pipe and a smile. He was a valuable part of that staff. I will miss him.

Mr. Emrich was a person who, just for knowing him, made me want to be a better person. More accurately, a decent person. Which, at the time this glassy-eyed, long-haired headbanger met and fell in love with his daughter Nancy, I couldn't have appeared.
Yet Dick Emrich never treated me with anything but immensely more respect than I deserved - and with every passing year of my loving friendship with Nancy since then, the enormity of his tolerance and kindness toward me has only deepened the well of respect I have for him.
One day, upon having loaned Nancy my 1968 Cutlass convertible, she ran the car out of gas in front of the Emrich home, and thought it a good idea to prime the carb with a little gas from a can. Right on cue it caught fire and melted down to the intake manifold. She hid in the house. Mr. Emrich had to stifle a chuckle.
My distant father having been in the car repair business, I'd try and think of reasons to strike up a conversation with Mr. Emrich. Invariably, he'd entertain any discussion about cars I could muster (thank God) and I'd assert my intentions to restore a Buick GS455 or some other muscle car, thinking maybe he thought that was pretty cool of me.
I realize now he had probably known darn well I didn't have the wherewithal to realize my hot rod dreams at the time, but this man had enough love to oblige me. For that I'll be forever grateful.
I think Christians and regular sinners as well could learn a lot from a man like Mr. Emrich. About things like duty; about not condemning someone who isn't worthy of dating one's precious daughter; about subordinating the dreams he surely had of tooling around Birchwood with the family (in the '38 Roadster, still in the garage today) - for more important things.
I will always have fond memories of Mr. Emrich, and when I think about the kind of father and grandfather I should hope to be, I'll light my pipe, take a deep breath, and reflect on one of the most honorable men I've ever met.
"What would Dick Emrich do?"

We have been Dick & Doris' neighbors for over 20 years. This photo is exactly as we will remember him with the pipe and half glasses mowing the lawn. Even though Dick would be disappointed whenever we got a new car and it wasn't a GM model,he was a great neighbor. We will miss him very much. Dick, it was a pleasure to be your neighbor, Fondly, Maryanne, Gene & Gary Ostrowski

I will always remember Uncle Dick coming in to the "gold room" and telling his nieces and nephews that he was Uncle Warlock. You certainly didn't want to cross him!
