Maurice "Moe" Sabean
Beloved husband, brother, friend
Maurice "Moe" Joseph Sabean, 80, of Denville, New Jersey passed away on September 30, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 7 at 12:30 PM at Norman Dean Funeral Home, Denville, NJ. Memorial visitation will begin at 11:30 that morning.
Moe was born in Peabody, MA on April 24, 1934 and lived in Hamilton and Beverly, MA, NYC, and, for the last 38 years, most happily in Denville NJ.
Moe served as an Airman in the United States Air Force. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Salem State College, MA and a Masters in Education from the University of Florida, Gainesville, which he attended on a National Science Foundation Fellowship.
He enjoyed his career as a teacher of middle and high school science at Hamilton High School, where he was also a coach of baseball and football. During his editorial career of over 40 years, Moe worked as a consummate science editor at publishing houses that included Houghton Mifflin, Ginn, American Book Company, CEBCO, Globe Book Company, Silver Burdett, and Pearson. He was the science editors' go-to guy.
He married Susan (Susie) Bernard Zalcensztajn in 1986 and enjoyed life at beautiful Cedar Lake in Denville. Moe was a kind, compassionate, and extraordinarily generous man who made friends easily and was beloved by all who were fortunate enough to know him—both human and four-leggeds alike. His quick wit and irrepressible (and sometimes irreverent) sense of humor were a never-ending source of joy to friends and family. He loved music, especially jazz, and enjoyed his travels in Europe with Susie. In retirement he was a volunteer for the Denville Meals-On-Wheels program.
Moe was an ardent Red Sox fan, rejoicing wildly in their triumphs and divorcing himself entirely from their failures. He was also a loyal fan of the Bruins, Celtics, and Patriots.
Moe was predeceased by his beloved parents, Eda M. and Joseph Boyd Sabean, and his adoring parents-in-law Florence and Murray Bernard. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, admiring brother Bob Sabean (Priscilla), brother-in-law Robert E. Bernard, nephew Bryan Sabean (Edna), niece Gael Hawthorne (Alan Fetzer), and a grandniece and grandnephew, as well as a great-grandnephew. Moe had many loving animal children throughout his life—including Buddy, Babette, Lionel, Winston, Simon, Jake, Ernie, Jackie, Louie, Max, and Groucho.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center in memory of Moe Sabean. (Visit www.f4mmc.org for information about donating online, by mail, or by phone). Donations in Moe's name will help patients and caregivers of Carol G. Simon Cancer Center.
