Having been a football coach and teacher at Morris Catholic when Jim and Terry came through the school, I was very appreciative of the support that Mr. Whalen gave the school (along with Mrs. Whalen) and the athletic program. He was a pillar of the Morris Catholic community as he was in that of Rockaway and St. Cecilia's through out his life. Mr. Whalen was a man of integrity and respected by all. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Whalen family

It is with great sadness that I learned of John’s passing. I considered him a great friend and a “spiritual father”. John was always there when going through tough times. He was always there giving support when times were hard. He was one of the first men who I met when I moved up to Rockaway over 25 years ago. He encouraged me to get involved with our parish and we enjoyed many years of retreats and church activities. I will miss his smile and the laughs that we had on Sunday mornings while serving as ushers. The kids of the parish will miss his smile and jokes while giving out bulletins! Even though I will miss John I take great comfort that he is at peace with Our Lord, where he no longer suffers the aches and pains that have plagued him in recent years. I also know that he had great faith and I am assured that he has a big smile on his face right now, enjoying Paradise with all his loved ones who were waiting for him.

Kind, generous, charitable, and witty (he must have picked it up on his visits to Ireland), John was a friendly and engaging presence in Rockaway who will be deeply missed. RIP

Dear Whalen Family,
My sincere condolences on the passing of a gentle giant of a man. My family has known the Whalen Family from almost the first day we moved to Denville and just down the street from their home in Denville. My Dad was a fellow Knights of Columbus and we all would see each other in Church. In my years as Municipal Clerk for Denville, I worked with John on many R.V.R.S.A. matters. I will always remember his kindness to me and my family especially with the passing of my parents Helen and Joe Izzo. I will keep you in my prayers and again extend my most sincere sympathy.

Dear Peg and Family,
My deepest sympathy on John's passing. He was a great friend and Knight of Columbus who worked so hard for our order and our church. He will be greatly missed. I will never forget the way he helped me during my years as DD and with new council developement in the Paterson Diocese. I am sure he is working just as hard in heaven for St. Peter. God Bless you and your family.
