Obituary of Marie H. Malecz

Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marie H. Malecz, of Denville, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side as an acoustic guitar player was playing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in the comfort of her home on Thursday, August 1, 2019. She was just two days shy of celebrating her 97th birthday.

Born in Hoboken to the late Rudolph and Agnes (Andersen) Wiese, she was one of two children. At age 3, her family relocated to the Indian Lake section of Denville and that has been home ever since. While attending Mountain Lakes High School, she played basketball and soccer and worked at a local ice cream parlor. After graduating from high school, Marie received her R.N. from Overlook Hospital School of Nursing.  She started off her career at Overlook Hospital, making her way up to Head Surgical Nurse. In order to be closer to home and her children, she started working for Denville Township Public Schools as the Head School Nurse. While working as the Head School Nurse, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Jersey City State College, now known as New Jersey City University. She retired after 27 years of hard work as the Head School Nurse.

Marie was a very active and dedicated member of Denville Community United Methodist Church where she volunteered as a Sunday School Teacher for many years and was in the Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Denville Senior Citizens. One of her greatest joys in life was swimming; like clockwork every morning at 5 a.m. she would be at the door of the YMCA in Randolph waiting for it to be unlocked so she could take her morning swim. She also enjoyed hot air ballooning with her son as the pilot. Above anything else, Marie was a phenomenal mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will never be forgotten.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank Malecz, in 1983, and her brother, Roger Wiese, she leaves only joyful memories to her loving children, Dr. Rick Malecz of Byram, NJ and Susan Roslund of Fjälkinge, Sweden, and her husband, Richard; her cherished grandchildren, Kristine Sullivan of Fort Mill, SC and her husband, Marshall, and Michael Malecz of New York, NY; and her great-grandchildren, Sabastian and Anthony Sullivan.

Public visitation will take place on Thursday, August 8th from 4 - 8 pm at Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave, Denville. Funeral Service will take place on Friday, August 9th at 11 am at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover. Memorial Donations are being accepted to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by way of www.inmemof.org. Please leave a condolence, light a candle, and share a special memory of Marie with her family.
