Obituary of John J. Flynn

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John “Jack” J. Flynn, of Succasunna, NJ formerly of Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in the comfort of his home on Saturday, February 9, 2019. He was 71 years old.

Born in Plattsburgh, NY, he was raised by his loving mother, Justina Junior Flynn, on Long Island, however he spent most of his time at boarding schools, including St. James in Connecticut and Assumption Prep in Worchester, MA.  He graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. While in college, he met his future wife, Kathleen Irene Mannix. They married on October 2, 1971 and began their family while residing in Manhattan.

He began his 37-year career with MetLife Insurance Company in 1970 with a position on the computer technology side of the company in their NYC office.  He also worked part time as an Associate Professor at NYU School of Continuing Education from 1983 to 1993, teaching Advanced Programming techniques.  In 1993, Jack’s work was relocated, and his family came with him to Succasunna where they have resided ever since. He retired from MetLife in 2007 as the Project Program Director Application Quality Management and ET Business Management.

Jack had many passions; an avid golfer, on October 16, 2015, he achieved one of the goals shared by all golfers, a hole-in-one on the Gold #2 Course at Flanders Valley Golf Course. He also was a very talented musician, playing guitar, banjo, ukulele, and mandolin. When Jack wasn’t at the golf course or playing music, you could find him watching golf or the NY Giants on the television, reading a book, playing video games on his computer or his Wii, or sitting in his recliner doing a crossword puzzle or playing on his tablet. He also greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play soccer, basketball and football over the years.  He was a phenomenal husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend who will be sorely missed and always remembered.

Left to continue his legacy of unconditional love and hard work are his beloved wife of 47 years, Kathleen “Kathy” M. Flynn; his adored children, Jennifer A. Flynn and Jonathan W. Flynn and his daughter-in-law, Jessica; his cherished grandchildren, Taneiyah, Justin, and Brandon; and many loved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
