Dear Owens Family,
I was so sad and sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I remember meeting Mrs. Owens at the wedding of her son. She was so kind, thoughtful and nice to me and to all of the wedding guests.
I am thinking of the entire Owens family during this time.
Sincerely,
Michelle Sara King

Janice’s family: I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through a similar situation and I was very helped by the hope that I found in the Bible in John 5: 28, which says, "Do not amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I am sending you a link with more information on this hope.

Memories of Jan Owens
I knew Jan because I worked with her husband, Frank, at Picatinny Arsenal for two years. That was 45 years ago.
My husband and I met Jan even before she and Frank were married. She invited us to dinner at her tiny studio apt which she shared with 5 other stewardesses. We were amazed that she could produce a very nice dinner with such a little kitchen with only 2’ of counter space.
But that was Jan – efficient, capable and always able to cope. We liked her from the get-go. And then loved her.
And cope she did with all the myriad health problems that plagued her from a young age. In the face of so many adversities, she was strong and brave and never, ever complained. Except that Frank watched a lot of sports on TV and Art would only eat hot dogs.
She was always happy and jovial and loved having fun. Always active and busy. She helped take care of her parents and Frank’s mother. She was the consummate cook and hostess and you all know about the service she rendered to the schools and town of Denville.
Frank and Jan moved into Denville just as we moved out – I was so annoyed at the timing. It would have been wonderful to live close by them. But we saw them a lot anyway.
I have so many memories. We were having a big 35th birthday party for my husband, on Jan 5th and Frank and Jan were late. Needless to say, we understood when Frank phoned that Jan was in labor. But I don’t think my husband ever forgave Art.
For years there were so many parties and dinners together. Fourth of July at their house and Christmas at our house, Jan would usually bring a root vegetable dish and it was always delicious. She always helped us serve and clean up. She got us unique gifts that obviously took a lot of thought – A candle shaped as a wine bottle, star-shaped chip n’ dip bowl, heated bread basket, crystal candy bowl shaped like a Hersey’s kiss – all of which I use and think of Jan and Frank.
One summer we vacationed together in Chincoteague when a hurricane was on its way. So, upon arrival Jan and I walked to the Coast Guard station to ask their advice on staying. I’ll never forget his saying “Well if it were my family, I’d leave and now.”
But, of course, the husbands were adamant about staying. So they studied the weather maps and forecast on TV while Jan and I packed a suitcase and put it by the door with our raincoats. She and I were very nervous; our children were very small.
Fortunately, the men were right and we all stood and watched as the storm went out to sea and passed us by.
Then when my husband and I separated, Jan was my rock. So many lunches with me crying on her shoulder and she just listening. She often phoned to check up on me and just listen. A true friend.
Frank and Jan had a great relationship; their love was obvious. And Art was the Apple of her eye. Once she met Katie, she couldn’t say enough nice things about her. She was delighted about the coming of a grandchild.
She was dependable, honest and kind. Smart, logical and well informed.
I liked her, I respected her and I loved her. I miss her.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We have very fond memories of Jan. She was a real good cook. When I was on my back unable to cook, the doorbell would ring and there was Jan with one of her best cooked meals ever! We will always cherish her friendship and will miss her dearly.

Dear Frank and Art,
My memories of Jan go back many years to our days teaching together at Paul VI in Clifton. I was lucky to have known her--we always joked about having the same first name and, that it was the same spelling! Jan was a wonderfully caring teacher, supportive of her students and her colleagues. Her generosity knew no limits.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you as you celebrate Jan. Though miles separate us, I will be with you as you honor her and all that she shared with so many.
Sincerely,
Jan Tupaj-Farthing

Demure, brilliant, humble, resilient, independent, thoughtful, beautiful within and without.
These words describe the Jan I knew.
Our friendship developed over time, as we spoke of life, nature, family, novels, poetry, recipes.
Jan was a gourmet cook,to which I can personally attest, and a delightful opponent in our scrabble games.
Though deeply saddened, I am profoundly grateful she chose me to be her friend.
Heartfelt sympathy to Frank, her loving husband, and Artie, her son, of whom she was always so proud, his family, and to all who feel the loss of this one lovely lady.

Frank & Art - My most sincere condolences to you both...I so enjoyed playing bridge for many years with Jan and the girls, but also had the pleasure of knowing her while living in Indian Lake. Jan always had a smile and a sweet laugh, even while enduring physical challenges - such an inspiration to me! I'm living in DE now but I am with you in prayer and in celebrating Jan's life...she was so accomplished and loved her family tremendously. Art, she was extremely proud of you and would often share your achievements and your joys. May God bless her and wrap you in his peace. Peggy (Richards) Soltis
