Obituary of Edwin Riker Pomeroy

Please share a memory of Edwin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edwin Riker Pomeroy passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Tenacre in Princeton, NJ. He was 72 years young.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ to the late Charles and Vilma Pomeroy, Edwin was raised in Rutherford. He met his soulmate, Carolyn at Estling Lake in Denville. They were married in 1973 and began their beautiful family. Edwin made a very successful career as a Park Ranger, mostly working at Ringwood, Swartswood, High Point, Kittatiny, Worthington and Waywayanda State Parks. He worked very hard, ultimately retiring as State Park Chief Ranger. During his 20 year career he was involved in law enforcement, and was in charge of rescue missions and saved many lives. He also trained other Park Rangers and especially loved helping Appalachain Trail Thru-hikers.  Nature was a big part of Edwin’s career and life. He made sure to teach his daughters about the forest and hiking, skiing, and tennis among many other things.

Always a patriot, Edwin served his country in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.  He would often share with High School and Middle School students about his experienes.  He was also an active church member serving on many committees and leadership roles.

Edwin was the kind of man that would take time out of his day to help someone that needed something, even if they didn’t ask. If he saw someone was struggling and he could help, he would find a way to do that, no matter what the situation was. He made friends everywhere he went, always putting others needs before his own. Above anything else, his family was number one in his life. He was a phenomenal husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and generous friend. He will always hold a special place in our hearts and souls.

Left to keep his legacy alive is his beloved wife of 44 years, Carolyn (Gilsdorf); his adored daughters, Beth Juell Pomeroy and her husband Jeff Juell, Lauren Beach and her husband Brandon, and Kathryn Jackson and her husband John; his cherished grandchildren, Grace, Liliana, Brielle, Ryker, Travis, and Dylan; his brother, Russ Pomeroy; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 26th at 11 am at the Interpretive Nature Center at High Point State Park, 1480 Route 23, Sussex, NJ 07461. Memorial Donations are being accepted in memory of Edwin to Friends of High Point, P.O. Box 817, Sussex, NJ 07461 or First Church of Christ Scientist, 144 Woodport Road Sparta, NJ 07871. Please leave a condolence and special memory for his family.
