Tita Marilou has been a beautiful source of inspiration for many. Of the many nieces and nephews she has in the Philippines, I am proud to say that she had fueled my strength to overcome any weakness and fear we may be going through.
When I was entering college, I already knew what I wanted. And that was to be like her someday. Fastforward to Jan 2015, we're blessed to finally host a simple lunch at home with her and Mama Luding. She said that we had a good life and that she is happy to see us.
Little did we know that it would be her last family vacation in the Philippines. I remember we were driving around looking for a resort so the kids will have a great time. She'd tell stories and easily laugh at Mike's jokes. When we stopped by a convenience store, everyone came inside to warm up as it was starting to drizzle, except for tita malou. After a few mins, she arrived a with two big bags of hot Pandesal! She said she's been craving to eat these local bread and was delighted to find a store! It was a hearty breakfast with cousins and family.
Thank you for not giving up on us and for always reminding us of God's faithfulness to us. You have a wonderful family. Thank you for sharing your life. We love you.

Barbara's Memories of Marilou
Mike and I will always cherish the wonderful memories of traveling to Italy with the Szabos in the summer of 2008. It was an unforgettable trip in every sense of the word! On the way to the airport Gabe began chiding us about how much luggage we had packed. He then showed us the size of his and Marilou's suitcases and told me how many outfits he had manage to pack for Marilou. Looking at the very diminutive Marilou I remarked, “Sure, you can just pack a little Barbie doll case for Marilou and you'll have enough clothes for an entire month!” I feel the need to state here that she was very stylishly dressed throughout the entire trip despite her very tiny little bag.
Marilou was what best be described as a “force of nature.” We both marveled how she was a constant and tireless bundle of energy, enthusiastically running up all the stairs and hills of Italy, including the countless broken escalators, the Spanish Stairs, the numerous ruins and monuments and the endless hills and paths of Cinque Terre. All this in 98* plus heat! She always left us panting in her dust. Incredibly, it was easy to forget that this was a woman who had just recently undergone a series of grueling cancer treatments!
No matter how spectacular or mundane the scenery might be, Marilou would constantly cajole, “Gabe, please take our picture!” She wanted to remember and savor every single moment of her travels. I, on the other hand, am one who shies away from the camera and cringe at having my picture taken. Needless to say, I've never been photographed so many times in my life! Still it was well worth it because it made Marilou so incredibly happy!
I also discovered on this trip that Marilou had an uncanny superpower. This superpower was one that I jokingly referred to as “Filipino Radar.” Amazingly, she could spot each and every Filipino located in Italy from what seemed to be miles away, She would then immediately run up to them without the slightest trace of shyness and engage them in lively conversations about her beloved homeland. I couldn't understand a single word they spoke but each time I know that I had witnessed that she had just succeeded in making a brand new friend. Marilou would also stoop down and converse with each and every cooing baby and toddler we crossed paths with in our travels . She absolutely loved little children and they also loved her back. Even then, she was preparing for her eventual role as Grandma so that she could someday spoil her adored baby grandson, Oliver.
Marilou was a beautiful, generous and gentle spirit who took great delight in the in the simple beauty of a sunset, the monuments and ancient ruins of Rome, or the breathtaking views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Cinque Terre.
These are just a tiny few of the wonderful memories we will always cherish about our dear friend Marilou, but we will also never forget her amazing spirituality and devotion. She sought out and insisted in stopping in every cathedral and basilica we came across in Italy and gave thanks to the lord for all the gifts God had given her as well as the wonderful gift of every single day of her precious life.
Michael's memories of Marilou
The Szabos, Cliffords, Herbsts, and occasionally the Romans are all members of the Once in a While Club. We meet at a relatively quiet restaurant, enjoy a nice dinner, bring our own booze, and catch up on each others lives. We usually meet at about seven o'clock and leave when the wait staff start giving us dirty looks because they wanted to go home forty-five minutes ago. At these dinners, Gabe and I would always engage in a playful game of one-up-man-ship. One evening I told Marilou that I could completely understand if she should ever want to leave Gabe. I even went so far as to offer to find her a ruthless “Jewish” divorce lawyer and that I would be willing to pay for the lawyer if she ever decided to proceed. It eventually became my running joke with Marilou and I would ask her that same question every time we would meet. Each time, she would give me a mischievous little
grin and laughingly tell me she would think it over and let me know. Amazingly, she never did!

My dearest ate Marilou,
You have been my buddy since I got here in the US. Thank you for the bonding time we had: our walks on beautiful sunny days, biking around Denville, playing volleyball with the adult recreation group, driving you and Gabe to and from the airport and dining with you and Mama almost everyday. You were the one who bound our family together. You always thought of the welfare of others. You made the difference in so many lives. For all that you've done for us, big and small, we will be forever grateful.
You couldn't have chosen a better day to leave us for good. You had the view of the George Washington bridge atop the Hudson River. The sun was shining on your face. It was the day God has appointed for you to come home to Him. We love you so.

We will never forget our dear Marilou whose strength and positive attitude all throughout her long ordeal is an inspiration to us all. She was an exceptional person whom God took away much sooner than wished by her loving family and friends, but she is at rest now. No doubt that she's among angels and smiling down at us from heaven.

Dear Szabo and Ramos Families,
Marilou was an outstanding woman with an indomitable spirit and an unwavering faith. She always amazed us with her incredible ability to bounce back after her numerous health setbacks. Even under these very trying conditions, Marilou always maintained a wonderful sense of humor and her beautiful smile. Rarely does one get the opportunity to meet a person that is so dedicated to God, her faith and her family. She was always so much fun to be with and travel with, and we were lucky enough to experience both of these with her and Gabe. It is hard to imagine a kinder, sweeter or gentler soul and she will be greatly missed by the many lives she blessed.

Marilou was a classmate in high school. If you can visualize a serious, studious, conscientious student --that's her. She was a combination of beauty and brains as I remember her being a class contestant to the Miss Manila Science Contest.
Since we classmates re-discovered each other beginning in 1994, Malou was not one to miss those high school get-togethers. She loved reliving the good old days and laughing at all those antics that she was rarely a part of in high school. She would ask: "how come I don't remember those?" And we would tease her with: "that's what you get for being always at the library!"
Malou taught us a great deal about patience and cheer in the face of trials. She could be both serious and playful. It was easy and fun to make her laugh. I admired her positive attitude, generosity, love of adventure and travel, and her earnest desire to play “catch-up.” Her courage and faith is truly inspiring.
Malou, you've been soooo present in our lives, it's hard to believe you've already crossed onto the other side, joining another reunion. Your lively voice the last time we spoke still rings in my ears. Be well amiga, till we meet again. Love you!
